Dumelang! Well it's two weeks in and we are starting to get our bearings and get comfortable with the city. I can pretty much find my way around by driving though I find myself constantly distracted by the little things I notice all around me that represent the life that is this place. People make their livelihoods by the side of the road. Mango sellers park their flatbed trucks full of the fruit under shady trees, often next to manure sellers doing the same. Yesterday I passed by an area where a man was selling wooden bowls; today a woman has laid out intricately woven table cloths to sell. In the western part of the city, efficiently called Gabs West, it seems as though a welding district has sprung up. Basically, everywhere along the roadside ... read more

Hi All, We can now be contacted!!! Both Anj and I have cell phones and would welcome calls anytime - remember, we are 6 hours ahead of Toronto. Anj's Cell - 011-267-74112008 Bry's Cell - 011-267-74111509 Well time is moving quickly here and we can't believe it has already been more than a week since we arrived. There is so much to do here to get things sorted. Back in Toronto, it took 2 months to deconstruct our life, sell furniture, cars, clean out the apartment, and find homes for the pets. Now, we find in Gaborone, we have to reconstruct our life again. Any place we rent will come completely unfurnished, including no fridge or stove and it turns out, we really need a car here as well. We have found a nice place that ... read more

We loved Botswana! After crossing the Namibia/Botswana border we drove most of our first day in the country, arriving into the town of Maun late afternoon for supplies. We then drove about 10mins to our campsite Situtunga, and spent a lazy day in the pool and at the bar. We headed off at 7am the next morning for our 2 nights/3 days trip to the Okavanga Delta. A company called Delta Rain organised all this, we got taken for an hour or so drive by 4wd through the 18,000km Boro fence line (attempts to separate domestic life/animals from the wild life) and down to a water way where the Makoros were waiting. Makoros are traditional dugout canoes made from the aptly named "sausage tree", and the locals pole these down the waterways of the delta (making ... read more

Hi All, Well we have made it - and are sitting here at the WUSC offices in Gaborone in the morning of our third day, the sun is shining and we are starting to get our bearings, a bit. Where to start - well, I think I will spare you all the details of the journey over here - lets just say it was long, generally uncomfortable and I have pretty much caught up on all the movies I was just "dying" to see - luckily, I was not forced to watch any romantic comedies including Russel Crowe, Diane lLane or that annoying Winona Ryder. The highlight of the trip though, needs to be mentioned. Our last leg of our journey saw us taking a bus ride at the Johannesburg airport along the tarmac to our ... read more

BOTSWANA!

While in Capetown, South Africa, our tour group had a bus driver named Joos for several days. Our tour manager, Catherine, called him "a bit of a country boy." Anyway, Joos asked Catherine what our group was doing after we left the Capetown area. She explained we were going on to Victoria Falls and then doing photo safaris in Botswana. Yoos eyed our group of 14 and skeptically noted, "This group is going on safari?" Catherine explained that in actuality, we were staying in some pretty luxurious camps and taking games drives in open vehicles. Yoos' response was," That's not a safari! Safari is when you take your rifle, your tent and your donkey and you go into the bush to hunt animals!" Well, Yoos, we didn’t do what you would call a “safari,” but we ... read more

Hi everyone!!! Just arrived in Botswana yesterday and it's really hot here. Even hotter than at Equator in Uganda! Last two weeks I've spent in Zimbabwe, except crazy money situation I had really good time. I walked and played with the lions, flew over Victoria Falls and had the best time with local people! Now we are in Botswana using the fastest internet so far so hopefully I can download some more pictures. Let's see.... read more

After over a month of either getting lifts or having our own hire car it was back to using African public transport. An especially difficult task it would seem, if your journey is Windhoek to Maun in Botswana. We were told it couldn't be done without hitching, but a few enquiry's got us a phone number of some random dude that drives to Zimbabwe once a week and could drop us off on his way. A few calls led us to a down town bus station with the promise of a 3.30 departure. As the taxi driver dropped us off there he gave us the parting gift of telling us we "should not really be there, everything will be stolen". Thanks. In fact it was quite the opposite - everyone was dead friendly and helped us ... read more

Today was a double celebration - Gemma's dad's 60th birthday and (our first ever celebration of...) Australia Day. There's a sizable Aussie contingent on our truck and they had plans to dress up in green and gold, so we entered into the spirit of things by kitting ourselves out in convict uniforms, complete wih ball and chain and hats with corks. We got a few stares at the border crossing into Zimbabwe but weren't (re)-arrested. The border crossing was a little painful - and all unnecessarily. The official (who looked half asleep) was stamping our visas with the wrong date, which meant the majority of us entered Zim yesterday! But also he forgot to give us our receipts for paying for the visas so when we came to the next barrier, we were not allowed to ... read more
