Today Morgan, I am now calling him Captain, woke us up to take us into the bush. We had a 7 hour journey to Savuti in Chobe National Park. He told us the first part of the journey we would be riding along the River Khwai…about 10 minutes in I asked where the river was…Captain says to the right and I look. All I see is green vegetation…well then that would be the river. Not much water, if any at all. Along the way, Sam and John pass us in their vehicle to make it to Savuti Campsite to set up before our arrival. We also saw another group we have seen a few times in Moremi, a group of 12! And then another car coming the other direction…this, my friends, is morning rush hour in ... read more

After our mokoro ride we took another light aircraft to Moremi Game Reserve. This ride was about 35 minutes and again, wasn’t sad when it was over. This area of the Okavango is a national park so there is a curfew at 7PM. We got to camp around 1230 and met Sam, our cook for the rest of the trip and John, our helper, had lunch, siesta and afternoon tea before heading out for our evening drive. More of the same animals and really cool looking birds and no cats. For dinner Sam cooked a wonderful meal…he sat down with us for 10 minutes to chat with us about the food…he is so funny and really seems to add to the experience. The evening came along with some storms…lots of rain pitter-pattering on the roof of ... read more

On Wednesday morning I woke up famished and began to charge all of my batteries…two batteries for each camera, my laptop, my berry, etc… Bruno drove me to the airport around noon only for me to arrive and realize I left my entire envelope of vouchers etc in the room!! A speedy drive back, which was only 5 or 10 minutes…Maun is a pretty small town. I met the rest of the group on the safari with me, and by group I mean one couple…older and from Sweden and really nice….Lena and Gert. I guess somewhere along their travels they had a bag stolen from them which included their visas and malaria pills…OOOOOPS! I think its all sorted out but that’s a big hiccup. We boarded the plane that would take us into the Okavango Delta. ... read more

After having only left JHB at 1.30 with so many last minute things to do (300 of them to be exact) we headed off towards the Groblersbrug border post. On our way we got a Sanral pamphlet that indicated that the border closed at 6pm - that gave us exactly 5.5 hours to travel 480kms. Nail biting but we got there 15 minutes to 6pm. Apparently Sanral hasn't caught up with the times as the border actually closes at 10pm. But it added a bit of adrenalin to what was a rather standard trip. First night was a pleasant surprise. What was meant to be a quick stopover point was actually a very nice place called Stevensford game reserve. But having had a rather stressful embarkment we were only too happy to have an early night ... read more

So 30 hours of traveling and I have arrived in Maun, Botswana. I left my GH in Bangkok at 11:30AM and arrived at the Maun Lodge the next day at 12:30PM with a 5 hour time change (7 hour flight from Bangkok to Doha, Qatar with a 2 and a half hour layover and an 8 hour flight from Doha to Johannesburg, South Africa with a 5 hour layover and an hour and a half flight onto Maun). So now I am only 7 hours ahead of NYC. Anyway, it’s a damn good thing time of traveling doesn’t bother me. I slept, I ate, I watched movies, I read and finished my Toni Morrison book, The Bluest Eye, and with that I’m pretty content…don’t need much to make me happy. When I got to Jo-burg I ... read more

Much of our time during the past several days in Botswana has been spent on buses. In sharp contrast to roads in South Africa, roads here are mercifully paved and devoid of all but the rarest pothole. Also in contrast to East Africa, the animals do not seem to stay within the game parks. This means that regular bus rides from A to B can turn into game drives. So far we've spotted several herds of elephants, water buffaloes, giraffes, and warthogsall from the public bus. Another fun thing to spot from the bus window are the huge termite mounds. These things are white, pointed, and quite simply massive. Our main activity in Botswana was visiting the Okavango Delta. Here, the water of the Okavango River spreads out across the Kalahari desert to form an intricate ... read more

Hello everyone from beautiful Botswana! After an unexciting night in Chobe, just across the boarder, we made our way through the Kalahari desert towards the Okavango Delta, in the northwest of the country. It is BAKING HOT here, we are absolutely dying with thirst all of the time and some people take that the wrong way, and just get drunk every night :). Not my way to deal with the heat, but there you go... On Wednesday morning we were picked up for a three day trip into the Okavango Delta. First a Jeep brought us through the desert to one of the arms of the delta. There local guides loaded canus with us and all our stuff and paddled deep into the delta (about an hour on the boats). The delta is a truly amazing ... read more

Botswana Botswana was the next country on the agenda and we made the arduous trip across the border from Livingstone to Kasane. The hostel gave us a ride to the border where we jumped on the ferry across the river into Botswana (rather more of a floating log that carried about 2 trucks, and it was all so slow that the we were told that those trucks at the back of the queue could take as long as 2 days to get across!). There was no public transport really the other side so we’d been told to hitch the 10km into Kasane (persuaded that it was safe)….anyway we were a bit lame doing this and after no luck in an hour or so a “taxi” guy eventually came past and we jumped in and were delivered ... read more

After the Pans we headed South in Botswana towards the South African border. But as already mentioned, Botswana is BIG and it was quickly obvious that this wasn't an afternoon pootle. First we broke the journey at Khama Rhino Sanctuary. This was a small private reserve that served as a convenient overnight stop - but also (we hoped) would give us the chance to see the elusive black rhino. This was a member of the Big 5 that we couldn't really tick off yet - our guide in Ngorogoro claimed that some half hidden black lumps were black rhinos but they could have been rocks to be honest. We drove towards the campsite without high hopes - the rains have started here in Botswana and the dense green bush makes it difficult to see much. There ... read more

Botswana is big. And flat. I'm not quite sure how Raz or Uzi stayed awake to be honest, driving for hour after hour in the stifling Botswanan heat with nothing more interesting than bushes to look at on either side of the road, which stretched for mile after mirage covered mile in a straight line off into the heat haze. In fact they could have fallen asleep for all we know... Sitting in the back of the Nissan with all of the windows down was like sitting infront of the biggest hairdrier man has ever known. Only you didn't end up with neatly styled hair. Needless to say it didn't make the drive any more comfortable. We didn't really have enough time to see Botswana properly. We were headed South down along the Eastern side of ... read more
