Hi everyone! Bry has done an excellent job blogging our life here, but now I shall take a turn and try to fill you all in on my life at work. Apologies in advance if this is a bit more boring than Bry's usual entries :) I am working at Godisa Technologies Trust (www.godisa.org), a very interesting place indeed. Godisa (it means "to help things grow") is a social enterprise, although that terminology is new and unfamiliar here in Botswana. It is a charitable trust with deaf empowerment as a core value, but we assemble and sell products including hearing aids, batteries, support equipment like audiometers, and Godisa-invented and developed solar powered chargers for the hearing aids & batteries. The solar powered charger is ingenious - often the cost of batteries is as expensive as the ... read more

Hello All! It has been a few weeks since our last entry and a lot has been happening here. We have had our adventures, both in the city and outside of it and enjoying it along the way. First of all, we have finally moved into our house. It's a small turquoise house on a street that I cannot pronounce or spell but looks something like this: Motshawartasela. People don't know or use street names here and in fact, when asking a local Gabaronian which street to turn on, they can't tell you it's name. We don't use our street when giving out our address, just what they call the plot number. How morose. Every house in town and in fact in the country has its own unique plot number. Good thing there aren't that many ... read more

So here I am at the end of my time in the beautiful Botswana! BUT before i talk about THAT I'll finish off recounting my time in South Africa! When I last wrote i'd just arrived in Pretoria. SO on our first full day in Pretoria we went to the apartheid museum in Johannesburg (about 45mins from pretoria) which was a real eye-opener. I found it really interesting and I'm glad i went - there was sooo much to take in though! Need to spend a whole day there to really get to grips with everything. We didn't have that kind of time though as we went from here to visit Soweto (an acronym for 'south western townships') which was really cool. Much more built up than i thought it was going to be - there ... read more

April 25 and 26, 2007 Botswana….Lessons That was quite the day and a half. There were two main purposes for this trip and a few smaller. First Molly (Jenni’s car) needed a new battery and I needed to pay for our trip through Hwange and Victoria Falls and Livingstone in US dollars. Nobody can access US dollars here in Zimbabwe and I didn’t bring enough to cover it so off we go to Botswana. Jenni, her friend Aruna, Dakotah and I headed out about 10 am with sandwiches packed in the boot and bottles of water for the drive. The travel time will be about three hours. While traveling under the 120 km per hour speed limit we were pulled over at one of the numerous police road checks in this country. The officer asked Jenni ... read more

Its actually the 12th May, but im still behind having only just found decent internet! Well ... in Botswana we also went to Maun. The Chobe NP is very pretty. We saw lots more animals including some much bigger crocs, hippos and their babies and more of the now very familiar elephants, zebra's and giraffes. We were almost charged by an elephant at the side of the road because someone shouted from the truck forgetting the windows were open! Apparently it was only a mock charge though. Then in Maun we went in to the Ocovanga Delta, a bush camp where we saw hippos really close and elephants, then the following day we did a flight over the delta which was amazing, we saw croc's and hippos and elephants really close despite being in the plane. ... read more

Sat31st Truck journey to the Okavango Delta- I slept all the way. When we arrived a few of us went up in a plane to see it and a few animals from above. It wasn’t as good as the micro light and I threw up on the way down!! Sun 1st Up early and onto an open truck and into the delta, then onto a makuro a hollowed out trunk canoe that 2 of us went into with one guy to “punt” us along. We arrived in a clearing and set up camp. We played a few games and then had a go punting the makuro’s and went for a swim in the delta. At 5 we went on an evening walk which I really enjoyed, the sun was setting and we spotted a couple ... read more

Fri 30th Up at 5.30 for a quick snack then on a truck fro 25 to Chobe National park. We saw lions just after they had killed a buffalo and spotted a leopard which means I’ve now seen all the big five- Leopard, Lion, Buffalo, Elephant and Hippo. It was a shame the truck was so big as if you were sat on the wrong side from the animals you cant see very clearly. In the afternoon we went on the boat trip that I had paid extra to do on the way up. We saw loads more this time- Hippos again and then elephants, a breed of baboons only found in Botswana, eagles and Kudo. ... read more

Hi All, Well, we have now returned from our first proper adventure in Botswana (not that randomly moving to Botswana isn't an adventure in itself). WUSC treated us to a long 4 day weekend of our cultural orientation for the country. We took the Land Cruiser about 700km West through the Kalahari and up to Ghanzi, to meet, live with and learn from the San Bushmen of the Kalahari. Most people visiting Botswana never get to see this. They tend to pop in, go see the Okavango Delta and the Chobe Reserve and spend big bucks for the experience, but miss the Kalahari entirely. In fact, it seems as though most of the bottom 2/3 of the country are completely avoided by tourists entirely. Gaborone is the first city I have ever visited in the ... read more

Mon 26th Up at 5.30 for bush walk. It was a very brisk pace and we saw some cool footprints of elephants and wild dogs and some sort of cat, but that was it no animals. Then we had a 3 hour drive to Thebe which I slept through. After lunch (we make sandwiches at the truck) we went on a boat cruse down Chobe river. It was really good, not just the animals but some cool sky, a rainbow and a bit of thunder and lightening but not on us. Most impressively we saw lots of Hippos but we also spotted small crocodiles, kudo and impala, some cool birds including pied kingfishers and swarms of dragonflies that reminded me of the flying keys in Harry Potter. Back at the campsite it had rained hard ... read more

Sat24th Bus journey into Botswana. Got the table again as everyone else seemed to just sit in their original seats. Swam again on arrival with water pistols to add mischief. Dinner was butternut squash which was lovely. Early night as didn’t sleep much the night before. Sun 25th No table or cards on journey to Nata but there were some trashy magazines to read. When we got there it was raining hard. Once it stopped Frik threw me into the pool with all my clothes on- totally unprovoked- honest! Hot shower after that was bliss. Spaghetti for dinner and watched a video of the Victoria falls activities. Unfortunately no white water rafting as there is too much water. ... read more
