So a very small part of me regrets not keeping up with my TB whilst away, a larger part of me however spent a lot of time being very rude about people who were obsessive over blog keeping. So now I find myself once again stuck at home alone and very bored, so I thought i'd give my brain some exercise and start typing up my blog...if anyone has any other ideas please send them to me! Anyway. I arrived in Botswana having spent the best part of three weeks in Zimbabwe, it will come as no suprise to anybody who has visited Zimbabwe of late that the first order of business was visiting a supermarket in Kasane, Botswanas version of a border town (albeit an hour from the border) I experienced a similair head spinning ... read more

After 30 hours of travel we arrived to 13 degrees in j'berg and then it was actually very coolin Maun for the first few days too (unseasonal). On our first morning in Sitatunga (where Susie and Matt live) we saw 3 hippos and a cobera eating a puff adder, a puff adder eating a squirrel plus - plus open billed storks, squirrels, golden weavers, crocodiles the size of small cars. Wildlife in Africa is everywhere! Every day there is a major highlight, and I find myself thinking, well that was amazing, then the next day, something else fantastic happens, and after a I cannot figure out what was the best experience - each was brilliant. In Pom Pom Camp, we drove behind a lion for 2km while it just strolled, we watched a leopard with a ... read more

BOTSWANA PART I LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, PLEASE STAY SEATED A whistle blows, an engine starts and a large pulley begins to turn. Now we are swinging above the Limpopo River, leaving the paved roads of South Africa behind and gliding in a suspended open basket towards the verdant riverbank in Botswana. In 1966 there were only 3 kilometers of paved roads in the entire country of Botswana. There are still none where we are going. The swollen Limpopo River is flowing brown and thick between its electric green banks. It’s so full that the behemoth Toyota Land Cruiser, the one that usually fords the river with ease, has to wait on the other side. We have to cross in a little wire cage pulled through the air by a thick cable. There is only a frontier ... read more

Hi Everyone, We are currently at the town of Kasane in Botswana and just visited the Chobe National Park on an early morning game drive. With over 55,000 elephants, Chobe has the highest elephant population in Africa and is the premier wildlife spot in Botswana - unfortunately for us, it rained early this morning and we didn't see a single elephant! The joys of wildlife viewing :-( Anyway, we have seen some cool stuff in the last couple of weeks so I will try and do a proper blog entry with photos etc sometime over the next few days. In the meantime, we wish you all a fantastic and very happy entry into 2008! Cheers, Dan & Janice... read more

17th December - a month tomorrow since we left home. Seems forever and only yesterday!! The border with Botswana is only 30 minutes away from the campsite and once there the formalities are quickly done - though we also have to go through disinfectant troughs - precautions against foot & mouth which decimated the countries livestock some years ago. A quick provision stop in Kasane - quite a busy town and then onto our site and an afternoon game drive in Chobe NP. Went in open jeeps with high hopes of seeing loads of elephants. Eventually saw a group of about 10 just before we had to leave! One of them got pretty agitated with our presence and came very close to the jeep with ears flapping and trunk up! Got a good photo of it. ... read more

About a month ago, because Nyssa and Ross were having internet problems, they gave me the password to access their blog. Big mistake! But we did tell them ahead of time that we were planning on adding a note from the parentals after we got back from our visit with them. At first they had a long list of conditions they wanted to impose before they would “allow” us to post to their blog. But they’re in Africa and we’re back in the States - and I do have that password. We spent about 10 days with Nyssa and Ross. We met them in Livingstone and spent a couple of nights at Victoria Falls. We then went to a lodge just outside of Chobe National Park in Botswana and then to a “camp” on the Okavango ... read more

We left Savuti around 6AM to make the drive to Serondela…also in Chobe National Park. Along the way we stopped by Morgan’s home village. And in the little village lives less than 10 people! Right now his six year old daughter is staying with his mother. When we arrived I expected her, Game (pronounced Ha-May), to run over and say hi to her father…unfortunately she didn’t even really speak…it was sort of awkward and I’m sure it’s cuz she doesn’t get to see her father that often…she lives with her mother most of the time in Maun. And while life in Botswana is good in comparison to other African countries, it still is not living like we know it in the Western world…I’m sure Morgan works his tail off so he can bring his money back ... read more

We flew from Windhoek to Maun, which is pronounced "Mow-oon", on Sunday in a little eighteen seater plane. The pilots gave us our lunch before we got on board, and we could see into the cockpit for the whole flight over the empty desert of Namibia and Botswana. I spent much of the journey singing "Fly me to Maun, let me reach for Botswana". By the time we arrived I believe Gemma was ready to kill me. On arrival we had a two hour drive through the Botswana countryside, passing through the occasional settlement of rondavel mud huts with thatched roofs, and slowing every now and again to escape the attentions of a passing group of donkeys, goats or cows. We were heading to a place called "Leroo La Tau", which means "The Lion's Footprint" in ... read more

After our volunteer experience, we headed back down to Livingstone and decided to take our hostel up on an offer for a fantastic safari at a budget price (low, wet season). We headed to Botswana, and to Elephant Valley Lodge for a 3 night 4 day Safari. It was spectacular and we saw all the "Big 5", EXCEPT lions. We were a bit disappointed because we found their prints and tried to track them most of the day, but they were quite elusive little kitties. We did, however, see some amazing wildlife and got a little to close for comfort to a protective mother hippo! The entire stay was so much fun and the lodge was expertly run and organized. At the end of a game-drive we could enjoy a cool drink and watch animals approach ... read more
