Another road trip day. Travelling from Iznik we went through an industrial area. They definitely do not have a lot of environmental controls on their industries. Lots of haze from the factory smoke. Interesting contrast to the windmills we saw later. We bordered the Sea of Marmara periodically. You could see the freighters headed for the Black Sea and Istanbul. Lots of rolling hills and agriculture along the way and tall mountains with what appeared to be snow at the top. Canakkale Has a very nice waterfront area and is a seaport. It is the nearest major town to the site of Troy and with Istanbul is one of two cities which are situated in two continents. The real history of the area began with Troy 3500 - 3000 BC. Previously it had been occupied by the Greeks, Persians who were defeated by Alexander the Great. There were various Arab occupations until the Ottomans gained control in 1367. Our hotel is across from the water. We walked along the waterfront and then to the Archaeological Museum which was quite good. It was a nice size to visit. Walking through the various neighbourhoods is very interesting because we get a sense of how the people live. The downtown population is very dense. Lots of people out walking and at restaurants at 9 pm. Exported goods from the city in the past included wine, hides, pottery and grain.
