Windy and cooler today. There has been a "cold" front moving through from Europe which will last a couple more days. Not unpleasant but definitely different than the temperatures we have had to date. The first landmark was Lake Bafa which is considered one of the more beautiful lakes in Turkey. At one point it was an arm of the sea but the silt eventually caused it to be landlocked. Next was a large flat area which produces cotton. The crop is very much like the cotton balls you buy in the store. This area is definitely westernized -including outlet malls. Selcuk itself is less touristy despite the fact that it is close to Ephesus. It seems most tourists arrive by bus and many stay at the large hotels along the coast. Our hotel was a prison up until 1972. It was extensively remodeled in 2011 - thankfully. When we stopped to ask for directions an elderly fellow got on his scooter and said follow me! Today we visited the Basilica of Saint John built in the 6th Century and is the tomb of St. John the Baptist. If it were restored today it would be the 7th largest on the world. It is located on Ayasuluk Hill which was the site of the original Ephesus (3000 BC) which later moved closer to the Sea. The Isa Bey Mosque built in 1375 is just below the Basilica. Isa was the Islamic name for Jesus.

I learned something: Cotton is grown in Turkey. Makes sense, yet it never crossed my mind.
