Ecotourism

This word is like a jargon in travel industry. During past decade it has emerged as a tag to label destinations displaying concern for the protection of natural panoramic areas, its flora- wildlife habitat, local population & their well being. As defined in text by professional bodies , it is ' a responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well- being of local people'. The definition provides various principles to be followed while implementing it.

Travelers often claim that they are participating in ecotourism activity during their tour, stake holders and community participant boost of practicing it, but are they really doing it? To start with, I would like to enlist few principles which we need to cross check with, which are.

Do's

*Follow all rules & guidelines at the spot.

*Gather all information about the place.

*Remove & carry back your litter from spot.

*Respect the natural, cultural & holy places.

*Follow local customs & be friendly with locals.

*In conserved areas stay on the trackway.

*Use local guides’ services.

*Buy products from locals.

*Look for environment friendly tour operators

* Stay at eco hotels.

*Carry reusable water containers.

*Ask for permission before taking local’s pics.

Don’ts

*Conserve nature by not plucking the plants.

*Never disturb & harm the wildlife habitat.

*Keep local water clean by not using detergents, litter, urinating in water streams.

*Contribute to conservation by making no open fires using wood, etc.

*Do not put loud music or other electronic entertainment.

*Don’t consume alcohol, cigarettes or drugs.

* Don’t buy products made out of protected animals or species.

*Do not make the spot dirty, use toilets.

*Do not exploit local children.

These are the basics of Ecotourism and to understand it in detail I will keep posting. Also invite readers to provide their insights and experiences..

I think it is great that eco tourism is all about wild life sanctuary etc. It is due to this the government gets funding to maintain our wild life reserves and also helps promote the importance and status of our wild life to the masses.

Ecotourism is more than wild life sanctuaries, its a responsible visit to any natural areas
Hi Sheetal, thanks for your comment. Just wanted to create a better understanding about the concept of ecotourism, hence this blog is initiated. Want to let you know that is not limited to wildlife sanctuaries, it is a responsible travel to any natural attractions. Definitely , government needs to practice it, to accomplish the goal of wildlife conservation through ecotourism.
