Hit west to the Fiordland National Park, and booked ourselves on a cruise round the fjord of Milford Sound. Unfortunately, the weather was against us, and the mist descended pretty quickly to obscure any decent views of the cliff faces. We were lucky in that we chose to go with a smaller boat company, Mitre Cruises, who spent a lot of time up close to the waterfalls, and also managed to find some wildlife, including fur seals and yelloweyed penguins.

Again, with avalanche warning on extreme, weather conditions were unfavourable, and so having to dump the idea (gladly in Thomas' case, I think!) of doing either the Routebourn or Milford Great Walks, we settled for doing a portion of the Routebourn tramp to Key Summit. It was cold, it was miserable, it was steep (although we met 5 octagenarians in full mountain-assault gear that shamed us into continuing!) and to top it all off, the views from the summit were abominable due to the mist and rain....but it was A MORAL VICTORY....I think....
