Budapest
View from a high place of some sort, obviously... ...And then for the last three days of our trip, we stayed in Budapest, Hungary. Specifically, the Pest side of the Duna (Donau) River. Overall, I think that Budapest was my favorite city of the three. It had an extremely exciting but homey vibe to it, at least in my opinion. The people were amazingly hospitable and kind to us; even in just three days, I noticed that quite a lot. For example, a 14-year-old boy and I were standing in line at a food court, and the boy said something to me, and I told him that I didn't speak Hungarian, and so he said, "English? Do you want to learn some Hungarian?" So my friend Katie and I sat with him in the food court and learned a whole bunch of random phrases. One useful word was "Gus" which means "thanks."
Our itinerary included visiting the Roman ruins; seeing a castle; witnessing some of the protests going on while we were there; having a bunch of freetime to just explore (during that time, several of us went to one of the Turkish baths and to an organ concert in a huge, beautiful church.)
Speaking of the Turkish
baths - it is definitely something to do once, but not worth doing it more than once. And no, nobody at the one we went to was naked. I guess some other ones were, but at the one we went to, everyone was wearing a swimming suit. It cost roughly the equivalent of ten dollars, and there are three big pools - one cold, one warm, and one hot. You are supposed to start in the hottest one and work your way to the coldest, and that is apparently good for your circulation.
Anyway... it is getting to be a kind of long journal entry. Picture time...
