I made a map of my tentative route... it is linked
HERE. I updated the link, hopefully it remains.
I will of course be starting in Puerto Morelos, Mexico, and crossing the border to Belize through Chetumal.
First stop in Belize will be Caye Caulker (found an inexpensive spot) to snorkel and relax, then I will head inland to San Ignacio, which is almost on the border with Guatemala. There's a lot to do around there -- nature trails, falls, ruins, and I'll make a trip from there into Tikal, Guatemala. This is what I'm most looking forward too! Then I will head back into bz and go south to Punta Gorda or Placencia.
From there, the route is not for sure... if things work out as I hope they will, I'll take a ferry from PG to Livingston Guatemala, and bus to Copan, Honduras, some more ruins. Philip said they were the coolest he has ever seen, so I really want to go. From there, I may bus up the western slope of Guatemala, seeing Antigua, Lago de Atitlan, Quetzaltenango, Chichicastenango, whatever else there is on the way north.
I'd like to meet up with Ann, Philip's aunt, while she is traveling in Puebla and Oaxaca, for Day of the Dead. I've gotten offers to meet up with folks in San Miguel Allende so we'll see. I just want to see Tikal...... after that, I'm happy with whatever comes!!
