Just a few more words about Havana before I get to the rest of our adventures in Mexico! All the guide books gave a visit to the Museo de la Revolucion as a 'must do', so we spent a few hours there. The Museum is housed in a splendid old colonial building and some of the original trophies of war, such as shot down American planes and Russian tanks are on display. It was incredibly humid and the building did not have air conditioning or even ceiling fans, and although it was interesting to discover the details of the part played by Fidel and Raul Castro in the Revolution, and the history of the revolution, it was hard work! We found the Cuban people incredibly friendly and helpful, or maybe they just wanted to practice their English, but everywhere we went, people would approach us, ask us where we were from and tell us about some event that was happening in the city and that we really should go to. It really is a very safe city to be in, although Caty, our hostess did warn us to be careful about their friendliness, saying that sometimes people acted like they were your friend for life and you would end up in a bar buying them drinks! We did experience this on one occasion when we were befriended by a young woman and encouraged to buy tickets for a show and then brought to a bar for drinks. Lucky we saw this coming and managed to escape the drinks! On our way back to the Centre from the museum, a young guy told us about the 88th birthday celebrations for Amaranto who had played with the Buena Vista Social Club. It sounded like a good idea and we were in need of some refreshment, so we went along to the cafe where they were playing and joined in the celebrations with a few mojitos! (Be sure to ask how much the drinks cost before you order them!!). We did buy the CD this time and got our photos taken! Havana is a great city and we loved it, the humidity makes it hard work and it definitely helps to have a bit of Spanish. We were envious of Elena and Sara, Spanish girls who were also staying in our accommodation at their ease of understanding and ability to more easily enter into life in Havana.
