Tolle lege! Tolle lege! At the climactic moment of his conversion, St. Augustine describes hearing these words in Book VIII of his Confessions. In English, tolle lege translates into “Take up and read!” This is my suggestion for us this afternoon. After posting this, I’m going to spend the afternoon reading some of the following Gospel passages that relate to the places that we visited today in and around Capernaum.

• Church of the Beatitudes: Matthew’s Beatitudes (5:1-12) and/or Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7); Luke’s Beatitudes (6:20-26)
• Church of St. Peter’s House: Healings in Capernaum: Mark 1:21-39; Matthew 8:5-17; Luke 4:31-44
• Church of the Loaves and Fishes: Mark 6:31–44; 8:1-10; Matthew 14:13-21; 15:32-39; Luke 9:10-17; John 6:1-15 and/or John’s Bread of Life Discourse (All of John 6).
• Church of Primacy of St. Peter (Mensa Christi): John 21:1-19

Feel free to read as much or as little of these passages as you like; it is an invitation, not an assignment. In fact, you may find yourself lingering on a particular passage; allow yourself to linger and be led by the Spirit. Tolle lege! Tolle lege!

Reflection on two journeys
Your reflections on your journey are so appreciated. I, too, have journeyed, first to Minneapolis to help a daughter who made a life decision to resign a stressful job and move to be near our other daughter in San Francisco. Now am in Louisville as another daughter prepares for surgery today. Please keep them in prayer as we hold you. Peace always. Pat
