Edinburgh to Fort Kochi

We have arrived safely in Fort Kochi in India's southern state of Kerala. We were anticipating some troubles on our journey due to having a connecting flight but all in all, it went relatively smoothly and there was no fall outs. Top marks go to Etihad for the splendid service received on both flights. It was refreshing to experience this, especially when my last flight was a Ryanair 707 to Magaluf.

Our taxi driver informed us that Kerala is a proud socialist state and that it leads the way for healthcare and literacy throughout India (we'll take his word for it).

After arriving in the early hours of the morning, we slept through most of our first day. We did manage to explore the monsoon soaked town of Fort Kochi for a few hours, apparently to the delight of the locals. Fort Kochi, and Kerala in general, has a very mixed heritage with Portuguese, Chinese, British and Dutch influences still noticeable today.

One of the most interesting things we encountered was the Chinese fishing nets situated along the beach which are still used today by the locals. Our first try at the local cuisine was a successful one thanks to the recommendation from our taxi driver. 1 down, 119 to go.

Tomorrow we begin our voluntary work with GVI.
