Today’s trip: Hiking around Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica
We spent all day in beautiful Manuel Antonio on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. The humidity level here is well over 80% most of the day, apart from the time when the tropical rain starts pouring, upon which the humidity level further increases! Zoe and I took a long guided tour in the Manuel Antonio tropical rainforest national park. We learned that, despite its tiny size of 200 hectares / 8 square miles, the national park boasts over 100 mammal species and close to 200 bird species, making it one of the most biodiverse areas anywhere. Our guide, who carried a tripod and powerful binocular lens with him, did a great job of spotting various species in the dense forest vegetation, and focusing the lens so that we could see the species close up. Zoe’s and my favorite species to watch was the white-headed capuchin monkey. We made sure to bring plenty of water, as the heat inside the forest under the dense canopy, made constant hydration a necessity.
In the afternoon we celebrated Zoe’s 17
th birthday. We took a swim in the infinity pool at our hotel. I haven’t been in a pool since I left Seattle over a month ago, and it felt nice to float in the pool, watching the Pacific Ocean for a while, rather than sitting on a motorcycle! In the evening we went to a fancy hotel resort in the area and dined at their restaurant. We ended the day by watching the movie Cars 2, at the private movie theater that the owner and manager of the resort operate. Apparently, the owner is an ex-Hollywood producer and director. It was a perfect laid-back birthday, and I am happy to report that the birthday girl was indeed very happy with the day J
