Mon May 18 Day 4

Go See Mad Max

It’s only day 4? No way. Lets see…. Woke up and did the usual poop and hose down the cage drill. I’m getting a lot better at learning the dog’s names. We have this tiny little box that has two beds in it and nothing else. When we stay on the glacier, two people are going to have to sleep in it because it’ll be close to the dogs and if there is a fight or a dog gets loose, there will be people close by. The base camp is a lot further from the dogs so that’s why it’s necessary. I haven’t seen the place but this is what I’ve been told. Tomorrow we leave at 5am to go back to Skalafell. That’s the place that I started at. I like it there, The beds are bigger and the dogs are chained up so it’s much faster picking up the poop. I think we’ll be there this time for 2 weeks. Back to today and the tiny box. I cleaned it out and put caulk on the edges to make it water leak-proof. They have this cool push broom that you can attach a hose to and water comes out the bottom of the broom. Then I helped the french girl, Charlotte bandage one of the dogs, Nilak’s foot because he got a really bad cut on it a week or so ago. Most of the dogs are starting to warm up to me but there are some who are still really shy like Igor, Hammet, Jake, and Nukilik. Me and Hendrick made some lines that the dogs get attached to at the front of the sleds called lead lines. It was this long gruling process but now we have to lines ready for 10-dog teams. The second part of the day we had the night off so me and the two danish guys, Christopher and Hendrick went into town and our first stop was this pool complex with hot tubs and steam rooms and pools and this tank of freezing cold water. We got nice and clean and chilled at this place for about an hour because it will be our last shower for the next two weeks. I tried the cold tank but it was miserable. You have to stay completely still and heat up the water around you otherwise everything will become numb. The hot tub felt so much better afterwards. After the pool, we went to Domino’s for dinner and I got the Texas BBQ because nothing is better in Iceland than a Texas BBQ. Next door was the cinema and we saw the new Mad Max movie in 3D and it was incredible. Like the best action movie I’ve seen in forever. We got back to the farm at around 11pm and now we have to wake up at 5am to drive back up to Skalafell. There are 4 tours tomorrow including a midnight sun tour so it’s gonna be a busy day. excellent updates
Glad you are blogging, have alerted your relatives. Why so many dogfights? Don't they like each other? The cold tank sounded awful, not showering for 2 weeks sounds par for the course :) Icelandic cuisine seems pretty American so far. Sounds like you are busy and love the dog pics, keep 'em coming! xoxoxo mom
