Corn Crop at Punal, Dominican Republic
In February 2007 the 45th anniversary reunion of the US Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic (DR) will take place in Santo Domingo, DR. I was a volunteer from 1962-64 (Well Drillers). Previously I have sent emails and photos attached to tell folks about our travels. The TravelBlog seems to be much more effective.

Earlier this year I worked with Google and other search tools to locate 20 of the surviving 23 guys originally in our group of 27 PCVs. Hopefully 5-8 of them will be at the reunion, some with wives or partners. Using TravelBlog I can tell the rest of the guys and my friends and family what happens.

Additionally, I may go back to my old rural community in very small Punal, just south of the northern city of Santiago de los Siete Caballeros (the 2nd largest city) in the northern part of the country. The reunion itself will take place in Santo Domingo, the capitol. We expect to do some "birding" in southwestern DR in the mountains.

More later!

Youngest PCV
John, I'm Jan Owen's son. I think he may have been your regional director in the DR. We lived in Santiago and at 8 years old, I felt like I was the youngest PCV around. I remember the times fondly and I am thinking of going in Feb to represent my dad. He would so much like to go but his health prevents travel. He loved every volunteer he worked with. Santiago, 1965
I remember Jan Owens very fondly, He was so understanding for us who needed a lot of understanding as we "grew" in the Peace Corps. I lived in a little pink house down in the barrio near the river and on a number of occasions would cross that btidge to get a little encouragement from Jan. I eventually moved first to Puerto Plata then to Imbert but it was the encouragement of Jan that helped along some of th rough roads.
