Curio Bay
Took this from the campervan. Thursday 19th February
Drove South on the coast road and camped at Curio Bay on a conservation campsite, read NO facilities, the upside was pitching right on the edge of the cliff, hearing the crashing waves all night, and luminated by the fantastically bright stars of the Milky Way. The site was surrounded on one side by a 3 mile bay and a rocky cove on the other. After a walk along the beach to look for Hector's Dolphins, who are evidently very shy as we saw no signs, we then joined several other tourists at dusk to see more penguins, the yellow eyed variety this time, coming up on to the rocks to join their young. Being hardy Scots (well one of us) we were fully prepared for the cold and out waited the other tourists and were rewarded with the evening penguin ritual only 10m from us, all very special. The beach also had a petrified forest which was equally interesting.
Friday 20th
Up early and off to Invercargill, our most southerly point on the trip. Interesting town population 50,000 it was freshers week at the technical college so a bit of activity around the campus .....students are the same where ever you are in the world!! However not sure what the rest of the population get up too as it was very very quiet.
Drove on to Te Anau our base for the next few days, a beautiful lakeside town sustained by a thriving tourist industry. People use it as a base for trekking or trips to Milford Sound. Camped at a lovley campsite just outside town, luxurious heated floor tiles in the toilets/showers, fantastic!
