G'day, well off to a good start this morning, rode the bikes down to the MSAC, which is where we swam. Massive complex of sports facilities. I tried out the 50 metre pool, they have one inside and outside, felt like I was in the Olympics !! In my dreams !! Stu did his drill !! We then rode back along the sea front, gotta say, I'm not used to this biking, came off the bike walking a bit like 'John Wayne', think I may give it a rest for a couple of days or so, really not very comfortable. We then caught a tram into the city, where we walked and walked, saw the lovely Regent Theatre, well just the foyer as it was closed, went to Flinders Train Station, lovely old building.
Decided to do the 'Old Melbourne Gaol' tour, so there we are with this guy who was dressed in police uniform, telling us we were arrested and handing out charge sheets to all of us. Yes, seriously ! Lots of giggling going on, we then had to line up inside the custody centre, females one side and males the other. I was loving this, he then
shouted at me to stand straight and asked me what my name was and what was the offence ? According to my charge sheet my name was Naomi Roster and I had been arrested for having an offensive weapon in public. More giggling, we all had to call him Sargeant when he spoke to us. I looked over to Stu, who was looking a bit uncomfortable, he's not into this role playing. We were then all marched through to the holding bay where he checked in between our fingers for drugs !! (Oh yes this guy was taking it very seriously )we then all got frog marched through to the cells, where he put us women in a cell and LOCKED the door!! Now, people that really know me, know, I am not good with locked rooms, started to get very hot and panicky, so told myself to do some deep breathing like I was at yoga. Meanwhile Stu is locked up in another cell, then the worst thing ever, the man turned the lights off, I was now starting to hyper-ventilate and had to stop myself running at the door and losing the plot !! (What was wrong with
this guy ?) There were 5 women as well as two little kiddies inside with me, who seemed to be having a whale of a time! My mind then started to run away, now thinking that this guy perhaps could have some mental health issues and perhaps he wasn't the real guy working at this place, infact he has probably locked the real guy in another cell and this guy has just randomly come off the street. ' Keep breathing Karol'. is this guy for real ? Eventually 'mad guy' unlocked the cell door, I felt like hugging him then, I took big gulps of air when I got out, found Stu and told him that it was horrific and I was shaking like a jelly, felt like I was on that Lile wheel all over again. He said, ' wondered how you were getting on ? I said Stu, I nearly collapsed in there, I could see his lips turning upwards, but he thought better of it and with that he sped off into the exercise yard, me following on my BAMBI legs !!
Awful experience.
So, when I recovered !!, which I thought I wouldn't, we
went into the gaol museum which was the prison where Ned Kelly was held and hung. Very interesting, could have spent longer in there but closing time happened so we came out and walked up to Lygon Street which is really 'little Italy', very buzzy and trendy, seems the place to eat and drink. This is situated by the University. Lots of deli's and interesting little shops. From there we went to find the 'The City Baths, built in 1903, lovely old building, so we are going to have a swim there at some point.
I must say Melbourne is very much like San Francisco, the trams and the lay out is very very similar, even the sounds of the cars, lots of automatics. The roads are in blocks and the whole set up with cafes and restaurants very much San Fran. We are finding the people here very friendly, there eager to help direct you in the right directions. Melbourne is a really lovely place and we are now finding our bearings.
