Siberia has an area 4,784,034 square meters, or 1.5 times greater than Europe, 2.5 times larger than Russia in Europe, and more than 40 times larger than the UK of Britain and Ireland. It extends form the Ural Mountains on the west to the Sea of Japan. And from the Arctic Ocean on the north to China on the south. Siberia is especially rich in minerals, including gold, silver, lead, copper, iron, coal, and graphite.

The climate of Siberia runs to extremes of both heat and cold. The winter is long and the air is dry except of the east coast. January is coldest, July is hottest. I am glad to be going in May, before mosquito season as well.

The great majority of inhabitants are Russians, including free immigrants (both peasants and Cossacks), The Turkish and Mongolian are also represented. The exiles consist of criminals condemned to penal servitude.

The Russian conquest of Siberia began under Ivan the Terrible back in 1574. He had merchants Jacob and Gregory Stroganov build forts on the banks of the Tobol and Irtuish Rivers. The Stroganovs hired 800 Cossacks under Yermal, the former Volga pirate, thus making beef Stroganov (just kidding). Scientific exploration of the land occurred under Peter the Great, when Behring discovered the strait which bears his name today. An area as vast as the old Soviet Union relies heavily on transport to the outlying districts. It requires an extensive and efficient network of railways. The economic life of the country was handicapped by the poor state of the railways since the Tsarist governments paid little attention. Large stretches of arable land laid idle, due to lack of transport, lagging that of Western Europe.

Area of Siberia
Hi there, I realize it's probably a typo, but Siberia is about the size you stated, only its in square kilometres (not Square metres)... It is indeed about 5,000,000 KM2. Rather large I would say... Great journeys by the way! I love everything about Russia and especially the Siberian part... Stay safe out there!
