Shangri-la otherwise known as Zhongdian is close to the Tibetan border at about 3,300 m. The flight back from Lhasa was again beautiful and I soaked in the aerial vistas. Although the 'old town' is mostly new (in old style) the local people are genuinely friendly - the women distinctive in their pink headgear. I hung out in the square with Hank (a dutch off duty tour guide) eating baked potatoes and kebabs from the stalls. Also had a brief addiction for local icecreams. One of the highlights was the tradional? dancing round the square in the evening - everbody getting into it. A wee side trip to natural limestone bridge and hot pools was a bit of an anti-climax but the company of seaoned travellers was a pleasure - tales from all over the planet. The bus trip to Lijaing wound down through the gorge losing ~1000 m with some great views - including fields of sunflowers - would have been gr8 to stop. I thought about Stefan biking in the other direction - thats travelling! Arriving in Lijiang old town is a little traumatic with the press of a vast crowd of chinese tourists in a maze of narrow streets. I am so stoked to be in Yunnan though - its a beautiful part of the world.

Please?
Hi Dad, can you pick me up a pair of black Kung fu pants when you are in Dali? If you are interested in checking out the monastary it is called 'wuwei si' and is about 3km north of Dali and up the mountain (away from lake). I didnt actually bike all of that route you travelled to Lijiang. I went via Daju, Fu Tiao Xia, Baishuitai and those hot pools you were at... Enjoy. S Baozi, jiaozi and over the bridge noodles in Kunming!
