Lifestart Foundation works with incredibly strong and inspirational people every day. While Western culture is progressively breaking down the barriers and celebrating the achievements and abilities of people living with disabilities, there remains a prominent stigma within Vietnamese culture. There are many organizations working with children with disabilities, but few providing relief and opportunities for adults.
In the Quang Nam Province, reliable employment and income can be very difficult to attain, and this is only furthered for those living with physical or intellectual disabilities. For many of our beneficiaries, their physical disability heavily hindered their ability to obtain and education, furthering their marginalization within their community. Despite this, and despite the hand of cards that they have been dealt their whole life, our beneficiaries give us hope every day. Never without a smile, they have moved through life constantly striving for more.
December 3
rd is International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD), a day devoted to celebrating the experience, achievements and expertise of people living with disabilities throughout the world. In honour of this, I would like to tell you all about a new fundraising campaign that desperately needs your help.
The physical pain that our beneficiaries experience
completing simple tasks every day is astronomical, and yet they persevere. Lifestart Foundation aims to help provide relief for this pain through the work being done at our Free Disability Community Centre., and in our community outreach. Our local physiotherapist, Thuyet, works with beneficiaries throughout the Quang Nam province. She is a new addition to the LSF team, but has quickly bonded with her patients and staff alike. Thuyet is a very important addition to our organization, because her presence now ensures consistent treatment for our patients.
Previously, we have relied on short-term, international volunteers to provide physiotherapy to those in need. Now, these same volunteers will utilize their skills to further train Thuyet, and build her capacity. As this grows, she will be able to take on additional patients, and expand her scope of care.
During the month of December, LSF will be taking part in the
GlobalGiving December Challenge . GlobalGiving is an online fundraising platform which provides a means so that organizations throughout the world can seek funding for their current projects. The Challenge is simple, LSF needs to raise $5000 from at least 50 different donors before 11:59PM EST, December 31
st.
The money raised through
this campaign will go towards funding Thuyet’s salary for one year. This will ensure that her many patients at our Free Disability Centre, and through our outreach at live-in centres and homeless shelters throughout the province receive weekly, one-on-one physiotherapy. This physiotherapy is essential to achieving a state of well-being that would not be possible otherwise. Through this programming, we are able to change the downhill trajectory of their lives and ensure that they are able to continue moving forward and surpassing the obstacles that life has thrown in their way.
In order to provide this necessary aid to many in need, we desperately need your help in achieving our fundraising goals for this campaign. Getting involved can be as simple as you would like. You can…
