Venice is one of those places that you just have to wander and experience.
I am married now and we were blessed to travel on our honeymoon to Italy. Of course for me that also means an opportunity for an exciting travel blog! We traveled to Venice, Florence and Rome. It was quite amazing. I had a fantastic time. It was definitely different traveling with a new husband then traveling by myself. I love to travel but have a hard time making plans. I have a very bad record with airplanes. While Pete, my new husband is the ultimate in planners. I am very grateful for someone who likes to plan and I can tag along enjoying all the sites. What could be more perfect!

Venice:

It really is a beautiful place. You can walk over bridges and see men pushing gondolas and canals with boats tied. It is Beautiful! However, if felt a little like a tourist trap. With over 50,000 tourists a day that is not surprising. Everything was really, really expensive. The small streets were crammed with people window-shopping. Chanel, United Colors of Benton, and other big brands dominate the shopping scene.

Guidebooks tell you to take time to get lost. On this entire trip we

only really got lost twice. When we were walking from one destination to another my new husband and I were fine. But when we got lost was when we had problems. We could not have done this trip without Google Maps and trip advisor. It got us from point A to point B with very little problems. This is great especially since neither my husband nor I can read a map. However, sometimes Google maps did get confused.
Trip Advisor told us to go to this restaurant. We set out. We walked and walked and walked some more. It then became apparent that we were not going to find this restaurant. So we started trying to find another restaurant. By this time I was tired and hungry. So I just started randomly picking restaurants that we passed. I am not sure what was wrong with the restaurants I was picking. Pete did not seem to approve. So, we kept walking. I was finally really frustrated because Pete was then trying to find the restaurant again. I finally said I was going back to the hotel and not eating he could roam Italy looking for this mythical restaurant. Of course

Dominating the Lagoons landscape is this very disturbing piece of "Art" Marc Quinns, Alison Lapper Pregnant. In a country full of magnificent religious Art I was very confused by this purple statue. Especially since neither Pete nor I knew anything about it. We thought it was a man.
afraid that I would get lost and never be seen again he dutifully followed me back to the hotel. Standing outside the hotel door really angry he pointed across the street and said why don't we just eat here. I said fine. Insert huffing and stamping of feet. And what should the restaurant across the street be but the restaurant that we had been searching for!

I did love the Doges Palace. I don't think there was an inch of that was not painted. Not familiar with Ventian Art or artists it was still very stunning yet gaudy and opulent are also adjectives I would use to describe the churches and palaces. I did not see as much reference to Marco Polo as I thought I would.

Italian fashion I was not. I sacrificed fashion for function. I wore black hiking sandals everyday. While my feet were saved, and I could go into all the churches with out having to purchase a piece of cloth to cover my bare shoulders and knees the August heat was a little hard in jeans and a t shirt.

"The drawing room of Europe," - Napoleon Piazza San Marco or St Marks Plaza. We did not spend a whole lot of time here because it was soooo HOT! Plazas are not a fun place to be in the heat.

Because in Italy people love to just sit and watch getting food and sitting is more expensive than if you just grab it and keep moving. We ate a lot of pizza on the run.

While Gondola rides down a canal can be very romantic if they were not so packed.

Warning tourist trap. You can pay to have your name written on a lock and attached to this bridge and you will be in love forever. But, the Italian police go through once a month and cut the locks off.

Gorgeous!
Pictures are unbelievable. Italy is something else, eh? Maybe one day I could take your mom there. Some of it reminded me of our greek island hopping trip when we were pregnant with you!
