We made the plane reservations for this trip almost 8 months ago. Who's 'we'? Barry and I are traveling with Marcy, Steve, Beth and Ira. Marcy, Beth, and I have been friends since high school (OK, I'll be honest, that means more than 45 years!). Barry, Ira and Steve became friends after dating and then marrying one of us...more than 30 years ago. We've been friends for that time but never traveled together. So this trip will be the true test of our very long friendship!

Marcy and I worked on figuring out the itinerary back in January, with the help of Tripadvisor, Mr. Frommer, and other travel experts (and reading other people's blogs, of course). After a few after-work diner meetings, and lots of e-mails with Ira, we came up with the route and booked hotels in each place we're staying. We also a booked couple of key places we wanted to see. Marcy wrote up and kept revising the itinerary with the ever expanding list of hotels and reservations. She also booked the minivan very early on.

So here's the plan..we're flying from Newark to Anchorage with a short stopover in Seattle. We are planning to spend the first 2 days in Anchorage, staying at the Copper Whale Inn. Anchorage will be where we celebrate the 4th of July. From there we'll travel south to Seward and stay for 2 nights at the Hotel Seward. We've booked spots on the Northwestern Fjord Boat Tour for one of those days. From Seward, on Sunday, we'll be driving to Homer for the next 2 nights, staying at the Driftwood Inn. On Tuesday the 9th, we have booked passage on a ferry from Whittier to Valdez, where we'll sleep for one night before we start the drive north to Fairbanks. We'll be in Fairbanks for 2 nights staying at the Spring Hill Suites. The plan is to leave the Fairbanks area on Friday the 12th for the drive to Denali National Park and for a 2 night stay at Motel Nord Haven. We've got reservations for the shuttle bus through Denali for Saturday the 13th. Our last night will be spent in Talkeetna at the Denali Overlook Inn. We leave from there to return the car and catch red eye flights back from Anchorage to Newark on the 15th.

That's the plan...I tried to show it on the map but I think I need a little tutorial on how to label cities. I'll keep you posted along the way on how this all works out!

Say hello to...
This sounds so very exciting! I am sure you and all your friendships will survive - can't wait to see the pictures too. My only question - you don't have the Palin's pencilled in for a visit? When are you seeing them and their clan? Give them a hello from me! Travel safe, Rita
