From the minute I stepped out of the taxi and spotted the Johnny-jump-ups framing the front door of Bulow Residenz, my current accommodations, I was totally charmed and completely vulnerable. My room is more than lovely but not quite grandiose. It measures approximately 25 x 20, plus the foyer, plus a bathroom. Everything is framed or made with cherry wood; all the cabinetry, the minibar and snack cabinet are finished with brass and glass shelving, the oversize king size bed is dressed in gold and burnt orange bed linens. The windows bay-set, with arches and marble sills are framed with floor-to-ceiling window dressing that backset the loveseat that is anchoring the entire room. What a great first 20 minutes!
Starting out on foot, I went no more than 100 feet and stumbled upon a charming antique store, Gold u Silberankauf, and my keen eye spotted a really incredibly unique gold charm, the age of which I am unsure, but it is a locket, it does open and it will go on my charm bracelet.
The man who owns the store does not speak any English but he was very concerned that I knew what to do with the locket.
He took a pair scissors out and showed me on a photo how I should cut something to go in to the locket, and then pointed to his hair indicating that that was a possible treasure to keeping your locket.
I headed across the bridge to the historical center of Dresden, and walked along the Elbe River. I had a proper bratwurst un brochen mit mustard, on the street then decided upon the hop on hop off bus.
I believe the jetsetters who populate Monaco and Cannes must come here to buy their clothing. Shops are just so trendy, and casually rich and bourgeois, just looking in the windows is enough to conger up yachts and side walk cafes. Speaking of sidewalk cafés, they are everywhere and they are charming.
And there's Biergartens, yes real Biergartens, framed with blooming lilacs; of every color purple, from lavender - too deep rich royal purple, fragrant gigantic, awesome lilacs. And yes, these Biergarten serve beer, all kinds of beer, I haven't been in the Biergarten yet but I will be there tomorrow.
Taking the tour of the city by bus gave me a great overview. I got off at
Paddlewheel Steamboat
Check out the tilted stack the stop where you board the Dresden funicular, I rode the cable car to the top where I had a late lunch at Shumann's Luifenhof restaurant, on the terrace overlooking all of old Dresden and the Elbe River. My delicious lunch consisted of 3 pieces of thick cut roast beef in a deep flavored red wine gravy/sauce, sweet and sour red cabbage and a type of herbed potato dumpling accompanied by a good German red wine. I finished dessert with an espresso and the mandarin orange kuchen.
There's really so much more to tell but it's approaching midnight and I am going to go and take myself a wonderful bubble bath. I'm a bit giddy like a young girl who's been kissed by her first boyfriend. I want to be fresh and ready for new adventure tomorrow.
Did I mention fluffy white terrycloth towers draped over a towel heater and wonderful oversize bathrobes and matching slippers oh well perhaps that's because I didn't realize that until my bubble bath at any rate it's time to hit the hay and I'll have way more to share with you all tomorrow!
