We made it to LUXEMBOURG, Belgium, Germany and France not to mention starting in the Netherlands, Woolly thinks he might have set a new Mammoth World Record for travelling through FIVE countries in one day, we are sending his claim off for verification!

Woolly says – what a day, I’m sure it’s a mammoth Record. Having filled up on croissants and jam, Ian and Jo were naughty by making sandwiches with the bread and cheeses on offer, we felt set for the day. First job was to locate the camping shop we had been directed to to replace lilo Lil, it was closed!!! Jo took a run into the big shop across the road and arrived back clutching Lil 2, so with beaming smiles we set a course for Luxembourg. Driving through the last of the Netherlands didn’t take long and before I knew it we were speeding through Germany with its beautiful scenery I was enjoying the trip immensely, then to my delight we found ourselves crossing the border into Belgium. Three countries already and we had only been on the road for forty minutes, with Belgium a blur behind us we cruised past the border signs for Luxembourg. We had all been looking forward to this country as it was a new one for everyone and we weren’t disappointed. The first town of Clervaux was beautiful with its white Chateaux perched on the hillside. We parked up and walked up the driveway to find it was CLOSED!!!!! Renovations were taking place so feeling disappointed, especially since we had checked their website the night before and there was no mention of closure, we took a few pictures. I found a cool Army tank which had helped to protect the Chateaux at the end of the war in 1944 and a commemorative bollard in thanks to the allies that had kept the towns people safe through the war years. We called it a day and went for a coffee in a very nice place, costing 5.30 Euro (approximately £4.10 GBP) for two coffees and some tart thing, Jo sat happily munching on a tart tatin while I helped eat the cream, a little sticky on the fur but sometimes you have to make these sacrifices.

Having finished our coffees we climbed back into Oliver and continued through the delightful countryside of Luxembourg. It really is the prettiest of places and quite reminiscent of parts of Wales, with curving roads and forests, we were very pleased to be driving through it.

Woolly says – It was so beautiful and the roads were lovely no bumps or potholes to worry about, they also have cool signs, I spotted one that gave the speed for good weather and the speed for driving in the rain, what an ace idea. Within half an hour we were parking up at our next port of call, the Roman remains at Echternach, where a large Roman Villa had once stood. Having paid 1.50 Euro!!!!! (Approximately £1.20 GBP) we had an absolute bargain, some real Roman ruins. Laid out exactly as the Villa would have been it was easy to see where the rooms would have been, I found the Bath House with its underfloor heating and some lovely Roman columns, although some of the walls had obviously been added to give the overall impression. I was still most impressed and it is defiantly the best bargain we have had so far on our travels. Wandering by the lake on our way back to Oliver we found ourselves in a lovely park area with geese and swans and even a heron, Jo practiced her French when asking for the toilet and it must have been ok as she was directed straight to one, I was quite impressed! I know Ian has a very good grasp of French but Jo is not what you would call multi lingual at all. Back on the road again we stopped to fill Oliver up at 1.32 Euro a litre instead of the 1.68 Euro we have been paying, we were chuffed to have saved some money. It seemed like only minutes before we were crossing the border and had arrived in France, my fifth country of the day, it’s no wonder I’m exhausted! A brilliant day through a wonderful country and a night in Oliver off road to look forward to, I’m a very contented Mammoth.

Glad to see the weather is cooperating...
it wasn't for JenGog as they passed through. At least they made it to Croatia with better weather although at this time of year it can still be unsettled. I'm looking forward to the rest of your blogs and the memories they stir from the time we lived in Brussels...many trips to the area you passed through, although I can't remember whether we did 5 countries in one day...so you have a record as far as I'm concerned!
