Hello, all my friends,

We leave tomorrow for Windhoek. Exams are finished, and what an experience! The end of the year at Bartlett was nothing compared to this. So many forms, so many meetings, so nuts! We finished Monday, although the students left Friday. Then on Monday evening the principal tried to get us to agree to come back early. We are due the 19th, learners the 20th and classes begin the 21st. But, of course, we have to have a huge long meeting about who knows what? So one of the quiet teachers said that we could perhaps do that next break, but we've all made plans. So okay, a meeting on Sunday. 5:00 p.m. was not acceptable to the principal, so they decided at 2:00. Well, Nicki and I are driving from Etosha that day. I just flipped out. (Not really, but I was very upset and said I already had reservations, etc.) So then he scolded me and said that the way to do this was to come to his office later and request permission to be late and miss the meeting, but not to take up meeting time with it.

So today I politely requested permission. He laughed when I walked in. But I do have permission.

Everything was so busy that I have had no adventures. The last two days have been so quiet, I have loved it. I washed everything I own, swept and mopped the floors, finished my CA marks (another bizarre aspect of Namibian education), and watched a lot of West Wing. One of the other volunteers had it all on her computer, so when we saw her in Feb. I downloaded them. I got some Dr. Who, the newest guy, also. The kids and I used to watch Dr. Who when we were in New England. It is either still going after about 50 years, or going again. They are quite fun. I once took the kids to a Sci. Fi. convention in Boston because Tom Baker (our DR. Who) was the keynote. Colin, who was about 5 at the time, got to ask a question and asked why he was called "Dr. Who" and he gave a lovely answer about really being Dr. (something very long) and every time he introduced himself, the person would say "Dr. Who?" So he adopted it.

We discovered two really lovely places down the road. One is called Ngepi Lodge. They have treehouses and camping. Also a cage so you can swim in the river without crocodiles. The current of the river is pretty strong, so you can swim laps because you barely move against the current. (Or at least I barely move.) The other is called Nundu, and it is lovely like Divava but about half the price. We just hung out, but they have an amazing breakfast I plan to take Nicki to.

We walked to the grocery to check on the ATM if our pay had been automatically deposited, and hooray, it had. When we came out the manager from Divava saw us and stopped to offer a ride in a humongous safari vehicle. We weren't going far, so didn't take it. This was good because I have no idea how I would have climbed into this thing. It was nice to be recognized, though.

Guess what! Guess WHAT! We got a fridge! Last Wednesday. We were having a quiz in the dining hall, sort of like Jeopardy but with teams of three, when Lucia came in and said, "Wendy, there is a refrigerator here." Mrs. Eises at the circuit must have been embarrassed when I asked her about her warehouse. She said they were all broken, but she found one. It is used, but doesn't seem to be. It is very like mine at home but about half as wide. With a freezer on top. I'm sooooo excited. If only there were vegetables in the store. But cold water has been heaven. !!!!!!!!! (I know exclamation marks get old, but I can't help it).

Okay, I'm going to add some pictures. So I am signing off. I'll blog more from Cape Town.

Neighborhood News
Wendy, the Pilates group--me and Barbara and Kay have been enjoying your blog. And your old house sold again--the woman is a therapist that Joel knows and I can't remember who her husband is. The street is finally ice free and dry, but our yards are still full of snow. I am supposed to start a wildflower class next week but we are meeting in a classroom for the first class, since no flowers are up yet. There was also supposed to be a free day at the dump for yard waste tomorrow, but they moved that up a week since you can't rake your yard til the snow melts! Lots of geese at the library and we saw lots of snow geese in Palmer last weekend. Really appreciate the pictures and so glad you finally have a fridge!!!
