Brisbane Blue TonguesBrisbane Blue TonguesBrisbane Blue Tongues

Rob Zamuner is pretty much Jagr in this league.
Greetings from the west coast of Australia. A couple of days ago I was sitting in a boring city called Brisbane which is slightly north of Surfer's paradise. When I say boring, this is no understatement. There is quite honestly nothing to do. It's probably the one coastal city in Australia that doesn't even have a beach. The only fun memory I have of the place was watching a professional Australian ice hockey game. Apparently there is a pro ice hockey league here. The Brisbane blue tongues home arena seats about 300, but it was completely full and loud. I'm pretty sure everybody was there to watch former team Canada Olympian and NHL SUPERSTAR!!!!Rob Zamuner play for Brisbane.

Anyways, as I mentioned, Brisbane was dull and I could feel my brain going into hibernation just by being there. The only cure for this was obviously to jump on a plane and fly across more than 4000 kilometers to the other end of the country. Less than 6 hours after my escape I was watching the sunset while looking at the Indian Ocean for the first time in my life. I flew into Perth and have spent almost a week here now. Perth is the capital city of Western Australia and is probably one of the most isolated big cities in the world. People over here are very laid back and the culture is quite a bit different than on the east coast. It's more of a Bar-B-Que town and less of a sushi town. The laid back vibe of the city often makes you feel like you’re in a small outback town. The nightlife is also quite a bit less pretentious and low key, much more my style. Finally a place I can go out to a nice club while looking like a hobo.

My favorite thing about the city would be King's park. This is a huge park which, according to the locals, is thrice the size of central park in New York. There is a large, well manicured, botanical garden, but the majority of the park space is unaltered natural bush land. The park is big enough too that one could walk around for hours without ever seeing a building. The port city of freemantle is also worth mentioning. It is technically its own city but it has been swallowed up by Perth's urban sprawl. It's not

You know that annoying children's song about the bells of St. Martins? This is what there singing about.
wise to tell a local that they're from Perth though...unless you’re feeling spitefull and you want to insult someone for no reason. They are very proud of their unique identity. The culture has a distinctly Italian flair and the entire downtown and harbor district is composed almost entirely of old Victorian buildings from the turn of the century.

Perth has been good but tomorrow it’s time to leave. I'm heading south to the wine producing region of Margaret River. I've found employment down there on the Wulura Olive Farm and Vineyard. It is right by a small town called Busselton. I'm not really sure what I'll be doing but because of the time of year I'm assuming it will be mostly pruning. I plan on working for 6 weeks or so, until I have enough money to buy a car. I know I said there was no way I would ever buy a car here, but I guess I'm just a huge liar. The reality of Western Australia is you need your own vehicle if you want to see anything, as it's so huge and sparsely populated. Also, used cars here are so cheap that I'm pretty sure when

My first ever view of the Indian Ocean. It makes the pacific look like a puddle of vomit.
I eventually get back to the east coast I could sell it for a significant profit.

I'm signing out for now. I'll keep you all posted on how the employment goes.
