Sunday, 7th April - Day Four: Dunedin to Te Anau 364 km (about 226 mls) including the extra 60 km round trip to Nugget Point Lighthouse, now unmanned since 1989. Early on, we stopped for diesel and bought a "flat white” coffee at the “Wild Bean Cafe” along with peach turnovers. Ellen and Tim shared a “luscious lemon muffin” for the trip, which is our longest driving day yet. It's really hard to resist those lovely pastries.
We’re now nearing the southern end of the South Island and had hoped to see the rare yellow eyed penguins near Nugget Point lighthouse. We didn't because they are rare! Instead, as we hiked upward to the Point we were delighted to see fur seals playing in the pools and relaxing on the rocks.
Having stayed longer than intended, we stopped along the coastline at Kaka Point to buy Blue Cod and chips and ate them out of newspaper while continuing the drive to arrive before dark. That fish was worth the wait - so hot and delicious although definitely not blue. Thank heavens we had an extra hour of daylight due to their summer time ending. We drove through some beautiful
countryside to reach Te Anau (pronounced Tee Anow), which looks to be a very attractive town at the southern end of Lake Te Anau opposite Fiordland National Park. We’re now nearer the western side of the country.

hello!
Hello Dear Friends, Really enjoying your blog, the photos are great. All that camera practice is paying off! My computer crashed and I lost most of everything, but Gus rebuilt it (Ithink) so I can at least get online. If you get a chance to resend me your mail address I'd appreciate it (no rush, I think you get these comments). Love you both! G&B
