On route to Nazca we camped on the beach for one night and enjoyed fajitas by the camp fire. We are pro tent erectors!

The Nazca Lines are gigantic geoglyphs located in the Nazca Desert. It is believed they were created by the Nazca culture between 200 BC and 600 AD. The designs carved into the ground, range from simple lines to figures such as hummingbirds, spiders, monkeys, a space man, lizards and many more. The Nazca lines can only be viewed by air, because of this there is much speculation as to how the designs were made and for what purpose. Some say they were explanations from ancient gods, a landing strip for returning aliens or a celestial calendar created by the Nazca civilisation.

We boarded a 5 seater aeroplane, Sarah to be co-pilot! The flight was interesting due to the acrobatic dives performed by the pilot. Much to our shock we plummeted towards the ground screaming at the top of our voices. This experience was worse than any roller coaster we have ridden on and amused the pilot no end. The designs were clearly visable although the pictures did not reflect this.

Feet firmly on the ground, we head to the famous Nazca Chauchilla cemetery. On the way we stop of at a ceramic show room where we watch one of the locals (Toby an ex Peruvian champion cyclist) create pottery using the ancient Inca methods.

In the Chauchilla Cemetery, bodies from the ancient Nazca people were preserved by natural mummification in the arid climate. Some of the graves have been looted by huaqueros (grave robbers). The bones are sold on the black market, as are the ceramics and textiles buried with the bodies as offerrings to the gods. The area is now protected by the police.
