In preparation for my impending adventure I had to obtain two visas, one for Brazil, the other for Bolivia. Luckily there is a Brazilian consulate here in San Francisco. I go on-line and navigate through a few stealthy fake consulate sites until I get to the real page. I fill out the application and get document control number, never in a million years did i think that i would have put document control number and Brazil in the same paragraph but there you have it. I go to schedule the appointment and there it is, all gray. Huh? No spots? Their web page must be down. I call and get automated info. I email them and get an automated response "due to world wide supply problems we are not issuing visas...". I email them again trying to find out what I should do, no response. I even tried friending them on facebook. I resolve myself to get my Bolivian visa first. There's no Bolivian consulate in SF so I look online and there's an honorary consulate in Minneapolis. I call them to see if it has to be done in person, if so my auntie lives close and can do it for me. "Them" is really just her, Gloria Steine, nicest woman on the face of the earth. She tells me what I need to do, I send her the papers, she calls to tell me she got them, and when I go to Bolivia don't drink the water and to drink tea from coca leaves to aid with digestion and the altitude. She sent my visa even included a sweet note of advice. "...The coffee is different and very good...". Different, that's so Minnesotan.
