Hello people, time for another installment… the rain didn’t go away so we did instead, we headed to the other side of Thailand to Ko Samui in search of some sun. We found sun, sea and lots of sexy looking “Ladies”….we got invited to a dance show every night and decided to go on our last one. Now these “Ladies” had big feet…hands like shovels…and probably a little surprise between their legs too, but they were very amusing. We finally found a perfect place to go on a fishing trip too, although we didn’t catch any big monster fish we all caught some funny looking little guys. Unfortunately we could not try any because our trip didn’t include a bbq.
A boat trip and a 10 hour overnight bus journey later we landed back in Bangkok. We had five days to kill while waiting for our visas for Cambodia and Laos. This time we’ve actually seen Bangkok (the tourist sights anyway). They have a dress code at the Grand Palace (you have to cover up your shoulders and legs when visiting a temple) and we looked sooo sexy in our hired gowns. We done a day trip to see the
Really???????...
Is it today? Tomorrow? floating market and the bridge over the river Kwai. Aaaannd we had yet another trip to the cinema 😊 this time to see Superman Returns…….Superman kicks ass!!! When we weren’t sight seeing, shopping or at the cinema we spent the rest of the time wisely, drinking buckets of cocktails…Literally… sooo tasty!
When our visas came through we headed north to Sukothai… which was the former capital of Thailand and has loads of old ruined temples. We had a day cycling round the ruins which was really nice and we had these really cool old fashioned bikes. We stopped off at a 7/11 shop to get a drink and the wind blow this banner that was hanging up outside and all the water drained off right on my head, yeah yeah laugh it up!!
Right at the border into Laos is this beautiful little village called Nong Khai. We stopped there for a couple of days and had lots of fun in the sculpture park. It is really fascinating what one can make out of stone!! While we were in the village there was a festival on; The candle festival… it is for the monks when they go and
hide in the temples for three months.
We had a very smooth border crossing and caught a local tuk tuk (taxi) to Vientiene, the capital. Although Frauke keeps referring to it as ‘the little village’. To be fair it is smaller than Washington and only has one proper paved road. In the centre of town is a monument based on the Arc de Triomphe. It was built from concrete the US donated which they thought was being used for a new airport landing strip. (Mugged you rotten USA) and that’s your culture lesson for today!!
While on holiday we try a lot of crazy food and here we had a taste of a local specialty……dried squid, Blaahhh!!!
From Vientiene we got the bus up to Vang Vieng. It’s like a little haven for western travelers with bar after bar showing back to back episodes of Friends or The Simpsons….which was fine by us… It was actually quite nice to just veg out in front of a TV.
The main reason to go there is to go tubing. It is soooo much fun to float down the river in a tire tube. There were several stops on the way
that had bars and some really cool big swings and zip lines.
From Vang Vieng we went further north to Luang Prabang. And guess what….. we really have finally seen a proper waterfall… no injuries, motorbike crashes, disappointments…. but a beautiful huge waterfall!!!
It really is a small world…we keep on bumping into a guy called Vaughn (what up dude?) who is from south Africa..we first met him in the middle of Malaysia, a few times in between in Thailand and then again in a tiny village in Laos?
We are catching a flight to Siam Reap in Cambodia next….but our time is almost up, we only have 2 weeks left. Anyway enjoy the tropical weather we hear you’re having and we’ll enjoy the tropical weather we’re having too!!!
