We started the day with a 6km Run along the cycle and walking path along the Yarra River. The path winds along the side of the river, passing through lush green areas as well as giving a great view of some of the millionaire’s homes on the other side of the river. Later in the day we decided to take the 8.4km walk into the city which covers part of the path we had run earlier in the day. We passed lots of rowers, some school teams out for training with their coaches riding along bikes and shouting directions through a megaphone. We had to stop for about 10mins at one point as we came to a river crossing where a boat was passing and so the floating boardwalk was opened up to let the boat through.

The Yarra is a muddy colour pretty much the whole way, we later discovered that this is due to clay particles where the surrounding land has been over worked and caused very fine clay particles to float in the river and give it the muddy brown colour. When these particles reach the sea they form a chemical reaction with the salt water which causes the clay to sink and therefore the water looks clear.

When we reached the city we stopped for a refreshing cider by the river just below Federation Square and rested our tired feet. We also checked out the prices to hire bikes as we were considering doing some cycling the following day.

We took a walk through the city, through China Town heading up to Lygon St in the North of Melbourne. Lygon St is famous for its Italian influence and is lined with Italian Restaurants on both sides of the road, all with their tables and chairs out on the street and touting for your business offering free drinks or free entrée’s as you walk past. We walked the full length of the street and then decided to go back to one of the restaurants where we had a voucher for 25% off. We ordered a sharer plate for 2 with 3 types of pasta: Gnocchi with Bolognese, Taglitelle Alfredo; with chicken and avocado and a Ravioli with Napoli sauce. A couple of bites in and we were both disappointed with our choice and left more than half of the dish! Lesson learnt, if they’re offering

free drinks the food is probably poor!

From here we walked to Queen Victoria Markets where they were holding a Twilight market every Weds evening in February. We were sorry we had already had our pasta as there were a whole host of stalls selling every cuisine you could think of and cooking it fresh. We had a walk around the stalls and decided to treat ourselves to a drink to watch the sun go down, Will’s choice was a cider and Jo chose some pink bubbles, but they didn’t have any glasses so Jo had to drink from the bottle instead. We also enjoyed watching some Salsa dancing, but Will was quick to confirm before we got too near that he wasn’t willing to join in the dancing. We walked down Elizabeth St back to Flinders St where we caught the tram back to the flat in Richmond.
