Gotcha Day
Our new daughter Qing Ling I'm please to announce Qing Ling has now joined our family!
I'm writing this Monday morning at 2:45 AM sorry I didn't get a chance to post yesterday, to much going on to get on the computer but here's how Gotcha day went.
Our group, 3 couples, meet with Evelyn our Representative from CCAI at 3:00 PM to go over what to expect, the itinerary, Q&A time. The kids where scheduled to be here at 4:30 PM but they are coming from 3 different SWI's (that's short for Social Welfare Institute, orphanages) and depending on traffic they may not get here on time. Qing Ling has to travel 2 hours by train to get here.
The first child showed up about 4:10 PM, a little girl. She seemed to take to her new parents just fine, not all the screaming like we heard the first time we were here but with only 3 couples it's not as scary as it was when there were 30 + couples/kids.
Qing Ling arrived around 4:40 PM. She so pretty! I know one of the first things everyone is asking, nope she doesn't speak a word of English. She really wasn't
Gotcha Day
Rose & Jasmine sure about what was going on, the Director and other staff that came with her explained that we were her Mom and Dad now, you could tell she's thinking “do what??” She didn't cry, but you could tell she really wasn't sure about this whole process. After the other baby arrived and went through his process of meeting new parents we all headed back to our rooms to have a few minutes together before one of us had to come back to do paperwork in preparation for today's official paperwork day.
Evelyn came back to the room with us to help, Qing Ling had lot's of questions to say the least. Her and Jenny spent some time letting her go through the cloths we brought. She had no problem expressing her likes and dislikes on the choices of her cloths. Looks like we're got another pink person although she did pick out a red shirt first. So what was the first thing she wanted to do? Take a shower and put on some of her new cloths. She pick out PJ's to put on and we still hadn't gone to supper yet, ok we can work with that. After she got dress she started exploring all the stuff here in the room, very curious all this new stuff.
While Jenny went back at 6 to do more paperwork Jasmine and I spent time with Qing just getting to know one another. She played with Jasmine on the nintendo for a bit but we spent more time just drawing pictures, like cat, flower, tree, simple stuff like that and then getting her to tell us what it was in Chinese and we would say what the English word was. She started repeating us really quickly so I think she was kind of getting the idea. And her and Jasmine had no problem laughing at my drawings, thought they were going to bust a gut laughing at my frog. Hey, it wasn't that funny! It was good to hear her laughing, cute laugh by the way.
After Jenny got back and I went to take my turn with the paperwork we headed down to the restaurant here in the hotel, Qing in her PJ's but that's ok we can work with that. At first she wasn't to sure about this process either. You could tell she was thinking ok why are we just setting here with these plates and nothing to eat. Time to order, decisions, decisions, what would she like to eat. Tried getting the waitress to read her some of the menu but she didn't speak a lot of English either and I don't think Qing understood her dialect quite. Well the papers we got from the orphanage said she liked about anything so we went for some noodles with veggies.
While we were waiting they brought some bread and butter, which was great since Qing was getting bored with setting here and looking at these empty plates. I fixed her a roll with butter, not sure she had ever had a roll split and had butter spread on it but one bite and she let me know there should be butter on both sides of the roll. :-)
When her food arrived she took one bite and seemed quite happy with what we picked out. Cleaned that plate out right down to the shine. Interesting thing, the girls ordered water with the with their meals, they still have the water glasses already on the table like we used to back home, but the water was hot. Almost the tempature that you would serve tea in. That makes sense since we couldn't drink the water right out of the tap without it being boiled and Evelyn tells us they don't really like cold drinks here. Qing Ling didn't have any problem with it, Jasmine and Jenny had to "warm" up to the idea. I can vouch for Qing not liking cold Coca-cola, let try a sip on mine. What a face! She did not care for it at all!
BTW I let her try one of my french fries, with ketchup. You should have seen her eyes get a wide and such!. I ended up just moving my plate to her and Jasmines side of the table so I could eat my burger. Yes I know I'm in China eating a cheeseburger, long story but I did try to order something non-western first.
We came back to the room around 8 or so, which is supposed Qing's bedtime. Great for me that I have another early to bed person, bad for me that she wanted to sleep with mom.
Everyone settled down for a good nights sleep, from the sounds I'm hearing sounds like everyone is sleeping well.
So that's a glimpse of our Gotcha day. Todays schedule we go to offical's office to sign documents, be interviewed and complete the sign on the dotted line part. After today Qing Ling will officailly be our daughter.
