Just outside our apartment in Amsterdam By far my favorite city in Western Europe. What a town! After traveling all night on the train from Germany, we arrive in Amsterdam just plain tuckered out. But the city awaits, so after a short nap we were on our way. The first night was great. Cheap Heinekens and good food. Not too eventful as we were so tired.
The next day we took a canal tour and went to take the tour of the Heineken Brewery. The brewery was closed - BUMMER! Closed on Mondays. Canal tour was cool - a fact I didnt know - when they were buidling the city, the owners paid tax based on the width of the buildings, so everyone built tall, narrow homes along the canals. The houses are so narrow and the stairs so steep, that every house in Amsterdam has a hook extemding from the top front to allow you to hoist up furniture through the window when you move.
We then rented bikes and went on a bike tour of the city. A highlight was an almost riot between Mexian and English soccer fans. The mexicans started singing "Celito Lindo" and the English were screaming out "God
Heineken Brewery
Closed Mondays - sneaky Dutch!! Save the Queen". The two groups met on a brige and started pushing, screaming and throwing things at each other. The English hooligans I understand, but where did all the Mexicans come from? Hundreds of them. It was like being in a TGIFridays in Van Nuys!!! After a while it just kid of broke up, but I thought for sure a bunch of English wer gonna go into the canal...
Outstanding, and I was sad to leave. If it was up to me we would skip Munich all together and stay 3 more days until we go to Prague, but I got outvoted!
