Asakusa
Me in front of the Kaminarimon Gate at the entrance to the Kannon Temple So, over the past 5 months I have been settling into life here in Japan. I have met so many people and I have seen some amazing things. One of my friends here showed me her travel blog that she has kept since she arrived here and has been sending it home for the past 5 months. So, I thought that this would be a great way to let you all know how I am and what I’ve been up to.
What have I been up to?? Well, I work at DisneySea 5 days a week and honestly I love going to work everyday. The show is amazing and I enjoy doing it so much. I can’t wait to show it to you all. The Japanese cast that I work with is great too. So, I had rehearsals for the show for 6 weeks, which was pretty intense, and then once we debuted I had more time to travel and explore Japan.
I have seen a lot of the city of Tokyo. I have been to Asakusa, where some of the oldest temples and shrines are in Tokyo, Odaiba, which is the more modern and futuristic area, Harajuku, the
Odaiba
Me and some friends in front of the Rainbow bridge and the Statue of Liberty shopping area and where the “freaks” hang out. And I have ventured briefly to Ginza, Yokohama, Roppongi, and Kamamakihari. All of these places are small prefectures that make up the city of Tokyo. It is a huge city and there is so much to see and explore. There are a lot of places that I have not yet been to but I can’t wait until I do.
There is also a lot to see and do outside of Tokyo. I have had the pleasure of exploring Kamakura, Sakura, and Nokogiriyama. Kamakura is south of Tokyo. It is a small Town that does not have a lot to it, but it is famous for its many Temples and Shrines and the largest free standing Buddha in Japan. It had the traditional Japanese feel to it. A lot of beautiful ponds with Lotus flowers all around and bamboo forests with beautiful parasols displayed. It is breath taking. But my favourite part of the town was the visit to the free standing Buddha. It was huge. We even got to go inside his belly for a mere 20 yen…which is about 20 cents American. I would love to go back and explore
Harajuku
The crazies that hang out in Harajuku. more of the scenery. Sakura is a little North of Tokyo. It is close to Narita. We went here to go to the “Museum of Japanese History.” I read about it in the weekly “Metropolis” magazine that is delivered to E-village every week. Anyways, as we hiked to find the museum we stumbled across some amazing ponds and nature. It was beautiful as well. We walked for about 10 minutes in a valley until we reached the museum. The museum was really neat however; there was no English so I was not able to understand anything. So, as cool as it was…it was not so cool too. Lastly, Nokogiriyama, now this was an adventure. It took about 2 hours by train to get there and once we got there the weather was starting to give way. The cable car that takes you to the top of the mountain was shut due to strong winds…so we climbed the mountain. It was pretty steep and very tiring but it was amazing. It reminded me of Indiana Jones. There was a stone staircase up the mountain through huge rain forest-like trees. It was so cool. I heard that apparently there are monkeys but
Roppongi
Some modern art beneath one of the tallest buildings in Tokyo I did not get to see any. But once we reached the top the view was amazing. It was beautiful. We could see the Sea as well. Then we started down the other side of the mountain were we saw a large God carved into the mountain and many shrines. The reason we choose Nokogiriyama however was to see the largest Buddha carved into the side of the mountain. It was really cool.
So, I have seen quite a bit of Tokyo but there is so much more out there to do and see. I have also obviously been to DisneySea a few times I’ve explored the area around where I live as well. But this is just a brief update on what I’ve done so far. My plan is to keep up with what I do and send you blogs on a single adventure at a time. So, I hope this works the way I’ve planned. I’m going into a short holiday now while they fix our theater so I have a few trips planned during the next 10 days. And then Kelsey comes and then my parents. So, I’ll have a lot of exciting stories to tell. Well,
Kamamakihari
