The Island of Koh Phi Phi.

Arrived on the island after pleasant trip, calm seas and sunshine. Madness at the port due to being harassed by local selling accommodation. Mentioned to one or two our proposed accommodation and they laughed. Not good.

Dragged ourselves and bags up main street and after 5 mins heard my name shouted and there sat Emma, Mike and Sarah, Emma’s original travelling buddy who has remained on the Island for the past nine months working and chilling. Had quick chat, set up meet for later then sweated our way up and round another mountain? Nearly revolted on way due to exhaustion and no end in sight. Eventually found the bungalow or better known as a shack and crashed out for 20 minutes to catch our breath. Very exclusive room containing not a lot, one large hard bed, cold shower and dodgy wiring. Never mind the trips motto of Embrace it was uttered and without further ado we tramped back down to the rows of bars, restaurants and found the beach. So far not to impressed with the place, doesn’t really live up to Emma’s reports.

After a swim and chill out on the beach taking in a little rain also we met up with E,M and S for supper. Taken to a lovely inexpensive restaurant and consumed Tuna and fried rice, Chicken and Chilli’s and Green curry. Sarah now has her’s at 100% strength, believe me that is bl..dy hot, respect to her. Paid the bill of approx a tenner between us and walked down to their huts nr the beach for the kids to mix up some homemade buckets containing the local Whisky, Red Bull and Coke while Sue and i borrowed a shower.

Sat outside Sarah’s hut and chilled for a while then where invited to join a couple of local lads for a BBQ of fresh Mackerel. Such nice guys, employed as the night doorman and toilet attendant for that resort/ bar. Really friendly and made us so welcome.

09.00 approached and we walked through the bar onto the beach and secured our bean bags ready for the much talked about fire show. I must say with some loud Drum and Base in the background, half a bucket inside us Phi Phi took on a completely different appearance. I was growing to like this place.

The show started with these fit lads, Sue expression i might add twirling lighted paraffin soaked batons and pitching them in the air for them to sometimes catch or let fall randomly around the crown. Where is Health and Safety when you need it? As the show progressed it became a little crazy with fireworks being juggled and more batons thrown around.

After a couple of hours the show concluded with Jack, one of the jugglers accepting my bribe to take Sue on stage and wrap his flaming balls around her. Do please check out the pics for an explanation!

A couple of failed attempts at limbo by Mike and myself under a very low pole took place then me who by this time was sufficiently merry and topped up with bucket juice and extra beer took to the dance floor/ beach and strutted my stuff along with the other young ones. Found my way onto the stage chatting to a NZ girl at one point who agreed to show me around her country. Don’t tell Sue.

It was shortly after this that i peaked and we took the long winding road home up the bl..dy hill again.

Found our little hut on the hill, i crashed out feeling emotional and worse the wear. Sue courageously dealt with the large cockroach found walking around the floor while i offered mumbling support.

Awoke the next morning actually ok, no headache just a little tired in the knees. Showered then checked out and made our way to the ferry calling in to collect lost belongings from E and M on the way.

That’s all for now, please read the Phi Phi – Koh Lante edition for the next update.

Best wishes,

J
