Hi everyone,
So we have offocially made it through the wilderness. We started off driviing on the Sea to Sky Highway, which was unbelievable. It literally starts in the coast of British Colombia and brings you through mountain ranges and summits that make you feel like you can touch the sky. The views were spectacular. It brought us to Clinton, BC. From Clinton we drove through forests after forests to get to Smithers, BC. The forest started to turn into the Arctic Black Spruce forests that I love so much. The trees are so spindly and unique. It reminds me of something out of a Tim Burton movie. I love them so much, they have a lot of character. In some parts of the forest the have what they call a drunken forest because the ground is permantley frozen the trees don't stand up straight, they tilt to the the side.
Today June 5th started off wonderful. Jen was amazed at the amount of energy I had this morning after getting up at 6:30 in the frigid weather. Granted I am not always the best morning person before I get my morning coffee but today was extra special. Jen
usually tells me I need to take my grouch pills. However, the campground in Smithers that we stayed in last night was gorgeous; it had a perfect view of the Seven Sisters Peaks and the Glacier. But most importantly it had the most amazing clean, private shower where I could get ready leisurely and not have any other campers invading my space. They actually played nature music in the bathroom, it was glorious, and I felt like a real person for the first time in over a month. I had a hot breakfast and good coffee, it was GLORIOUS. Jen didn’t understand the power of a great morning. We left Smithers, BC full of energy and revitalized at 7:30 am ( a new record for us) to make it as close to the Yukon border as possible. Thankfully we made it the Dawson City, Yukon. The road was unbelievable. We covered about 550 miles on the Stewart Cassiar Highway. The road was so twisty turny and portions of it are still unpaved.
I don’t know if I can actually explain in words or pictures the drive that brought us from Vancouver to Dawson City, Yukon. It was the most
amazing and scenic drive that I could ever imagine taking. Don’t get me wrong it was three very long days in the car, about 10 hours a day, but it was so worth it. Everywhere you looked there were the most beautiful forests, mountains, and vistas. The view from the car left us with our mouths hanging open in awe. The Coastal Mountains was gorgeous, rising about 9,000 to 10,000 feet. The mountains were not just snow capped but covered in snow and pristine snow at that. On the base of the mountain they are covered in black and dark spruce trees. The forests are king in this part of the world. It really makes me so happy to see that there are still places left in this world that are almost untouched by humans.
The wildlife is still free, the forests are still rugged, and the people are hearty. It makes me think about what life can be like when you step out of your bubble. It makes me think about how vast and unbelievable the world actually is and how hard it is to comprehend the magnitude of it all. I’m being very reflective tonight but there
are so many thoughts that run through your head while out of the road that it helps to get them down. On the lighter side, we did have a lot of fun in the car today with our sing longs and photo sessions. I will let the pictures speak for themselves, however, please be aware that they do the scenery no justice.
There were stretches of the road where you did not come across another single soul for hours. The towns were little blips, it you blinked you would miss them. This is truly rural country, truly. So unlike anything you would get in Massachusetts or anywhere on the East Coast for that matter. I hope and pray that if someone where to go back in a couple hundred years from now it would still look the same, undeveloped and natural. I would like to think that I could live a simple live in a cabin in the forest next to a mountain somewhere but I think I am way too used to my amenities in life. Maybe bringing the laptop while camping was my first hint, or maybe the toe nail polish, or the make up bag, and
hairdryer. Oh the list goes on and on. I’m not sure I am quite the hearty stock that survives out here in the last frontier. Jen and I have decided to write a book called the Girly Girl Guide to the wilderness, hiking, and toe nail polish: A journey from Massachusetts to Alaska and back. Check for it in a bookstore near you!
I hope all is well and please leave comments!! By the way, you guys have seriously been slacking in the comment department! Just kidding!
Love Laura
