So it kind of looks like summer camp, but it's pretty cool.
Hey everybody
I hope you're all doing super. Things here are definitely exciting as always! Yesterday I finally changed rooms, so I'm really able to get settled now. Although this new room is a bit smaller than my previous one, I actually like it a lot more. It's cozier, and feels a lot less empty, for one. It also has some nice features like a ceiling fan, a bug net on the bed, and a mirror in the bathroom; all things my previous room did not have. It is on the first floor of the villa, rather than the second floor so it's a bit noisier due to the foot traffic, but I don't mind. I'm not in there much anyway! What's particularly nice about it is that the outter wall is the wall into the garden and I get some beautiful garden sounds while I sleep. With the breeze from the fan, and the sounds, it's almost like sleeping outside in my tent! It's lovely!

The new bathroom is great, too, but really strange... the shape of it is almost triangular with the shower stuck into the point of the triangle. I should explain, first of all, that the

Definitely watch out for the spider web in the corner...
bathroom is just one big tiled room with a toilet, sink, and shower. There is nothing to separate any of the three fixtures, which is common here but something I still have to get used to. I also have to get used to the very large spider web in the corner of the shower that flaps when the water runs.... (shudder)... However the water pressure is FANTASTIC (by African standards) and highly superior to the previous shower I was using upstairs. So this move has been a very positive thing!

In other news, I've managed to come up with some other curious ailment. I can't believe this is the second time I've had a health issue since I arrived less than 2 weeks ago! Last night, the area around my eyes started burning and wouldn't stop, but it wasn't red at all. I went to bed, but still the same thing when I woke up. So I iced it and tried to calm it down, but as soon as the ice was off the burning came back. Now, I am not one to go to the doctor voluntarily (as many of you already know), but I had heard rumours
SinkSinkSink

Probably the most glamourous part of the bathroom. I'll spare you the view inside the sink... the drain still has plastic covering on it!
about microscopic worms that can get in the eye and cause blindness, and even though I was sure this had nothing to do with worms, I was equally sure I'd regret it if I lost my eyesight because I was trying to be a cowboy. So, this morning I took a trip (with a driver) to an eye specialist here in town. There is way too much to say about this trip and it deserves a blog all to itself (conditions, waiting room people, equipment, location, etc), but for the sake of brevity I will say this: I'm fine and there are no worms in my eyes.

(sigh of relief for the readership)

I'm also pretty sure that the doctor had no idea what was wrong with them, but I'll try the drops he gave me and hopefully they will get better. This is not meant to be a dig at African doctors; I think most Canadian doctors don't have a clue either.

Anyway, I've attached some pics of my new digs so you guys can get an idea of what it's like here. It kind of reminds me of summer camp, although one must keep in

Ok, so let's compare the size of a normal (this is considered personal size) beer bottle to the bottles of other beverages... Yowsers!
mind that this is very high living by African standards. I hope you can make out the dolphin bedside lamp that I inherited from the previous occupant. I have no idea what they were thinking buying a lamp like that, but I'll bet it came about from an innocent but vague request for a lamp, and this is what they got. Things like that often happen here it seems, so I'm trying to be as involved as possible in the purchases I request!

Anyway, I'm gonna let you all enjoy the pics now. Check out how big the beer is here!

PS I'm definitely loading up on Fanta... mmm... Fanta...

Illness
First IB, then Chiggers, then exploding illness, now mystery eye burning... Africa is making you ill. I think you had better come home in July - eat a jelly doughnut and play in the Indians tournament.

Your Awesome
Brownie, thanks so much for the info. Your stories make me appreciate what we have in Canada. You are a brave lady. Remember every minute of your trip you will have stories for the rest of your life to tell. Training for rugby is going well we are getting the numbers up but not to full team yet. I have some ladies coming from Brockville. I am trying to get the ladies more physical, faster and better conditioned. Its a slow process but big improvements since we began. Stue

Big Beers???
So the beers are bigger....does that mean you have to drink them faster so they don't get warm?????? I hope you get all these illnesses out of your system soon, I think I'll be sending you some chicken soup. Sulu would love to play on your bed.... that netting would fun to climb I thing ;-) Stay well, love mom.

Go Brownie!
So what the hell? I finally return home and you're in Africa already?! That's not cool... Who will cheer on "Go Blackie" when I get my 5 minutes of playing time this season? It just won't be the same I tell you. Well I'm glad things are going well (minus all the sickness problems you seem to have). It sounds like an experience of a lifetime! Keep me posted, and keep in touch! -Blackie
