elementary school with hills inthe background Went to church yesterday with the McIntosh’s. Their church is held in the local preschool cafeteria since it is still a very new and small church. Lee’s father is actually the interim preacher until they get a new one. I don’t know if I have mentioned this to everyone, but Lee’s family is Very religious. Independent Baptist. Every time I visit they bring up my religious beliefs, or there lack of, and I have to find some way to settle them down before they try to convert me on the spot. Or at least try to Witness me. O well. I appreciate that they care so much for me although I just wish they could express it in a better way. I was expecting the whole talk yesterday, but it came today instead. I’ll write about that in a bit.
After returning home from church, everyone, except for me, promptly fell asleep for at least an hour, and the remaining of the day was spent doing very little work. Lee, Lee’s sister, Crystal, and I played ping pong for a while using bricks instead of a real net. Lee’s family seems to take the whole ‘day of rest’ thing quite
boiling pots falls
supposed to look like boiling pots seriously.
Now today. Lee and I were planning on riding bikes down to Green Sands for the day. Yes, Green Sands is a beach named after its green sands. Anyways, Mrs. McIntosh lost her purse so Lee and I were forced to drive(not me, I just came along) her and Crystal into Hilo for errands and doctor appointments. Not a big deal, but today was the only day we were planning on hitting the beaches.
While Crystal was at her appointment, I went and bought a nice pair of sunglasses since mine were falling apart. Okleys actually, and they cost a bit of money. They’ll be worth it though with me backing in Japan.
While Mrs. McIntosh was at her doctor’s appointment, the three of us explored this area around a waterfall. Lee and Crystal aren’t very good climbers so they took there time moving from place to place while I hopped around on the rocks like a rabbit. The big waterfall up the river proved to be inaccessible to me although I did try. There wasn’t really much in the way of paths so I ended up getting pretty muddy. Incidentally, it’s been raining every day
I’ve been in Hawaii. Only light rain though. Unfortunately, my camera took a short spill and seems to be having problems. I had a really good time exploring.
On the way back from Hilo that day was when the McIntosh’s corned me. I was reading the ‘Davinchi Code’, and they caught me doing so. After explaining to them the premise of the book, which they were greatly horrified at, I found myself put to the question. They are very nice about it but quite persistent. After talking religion and beliefs for the entire trip back to their house(1.5 hours) and managing not to completely embarrass myself, I finally got a reprieve when we arrived home. As I mentioned before, they are very religious. The bible is flawless, and if you notice any contradictions in the bible, it’s because you haven’t correctly comprehended it.
I’ll write more about my thoughts about the ‘davinchi code’ later.
Lee and I are still(not sure if I mentioned this in my previous posts or not) to Monnea Kea, the tallest mountain in Hawaii, and climb it. At the top of a seven mile hike is the worlds best observatory. I’m planning on
asking if they take Mechanical Engineer interns up there. I seriously doubt it, but I can always dream. It is supposed to be the best observatory in the world because of its altitude and its relative isolation. There are actually pretty strict rules governing the island to prohibit light pollution. For example, the street lights throughout the island must be an orange color, which apparently doesn’t interfere with the telescopes. I’m very impressed by it all. Unfortunately Lee is having second thoughts. Despite the fact that I’ve been planning this since Saturday, he seems to have some reservations. Granted, the mountain is a few hours drive away, and it is a 7 mile (straight up) hike to the top. I’m not sure I can make it or not, but I at least have to try. I’d couldn’t stand myself if I simply walked away. Also, since Lee is the only one allowed to drive, he is going to have to drive 2.5+ hours out there and then back after all of the hiking. I’m going to be mad about him for backing out after several days of planning. But I won’t be nearly as mad if we wake up at 5 tomorrow morning, and he refuses to go. O well. I’ll let you guys know how it turns out. Once again, pictures will come later, probably when I make it to Japan.

Religion
I can´t imagine having to talk religion with someone whose relationship I wished to maintain... Proud of you for making it through that. I don´t think they´d be letting me sleep under their roof anymore if I were there. Good luck with the mountain. We´ll just have to go back and hike it some other time if it doesn´t work out! Just like I think we should go to Patagonia and hike sometime... hehe...
