More driving across the hills today, overlooking the Tarn river. We had picked this route to get a good view of the world’s highest viaduct at Millau and were delighted when there was an open visitor centre and viewing point there. It really is a feat of modern engineering and has to be seen to be believed ( though Max was relieved that we didn’t have to actually drive over it ). As the afternoon turned to evening, the weather started to deteriorate. Luckily, we were able to secure a parking spot at a local lamb farm for the night. Before our departure from England, my cousin Anne and her husband Paul had given us the gift of a membership to France Passion. This is a scheme whereby, for an annual fee, motorhomes can stay for free on farms and small producers. This particular place looked ideal because it was situated on the hills above Millau and offered food at the associated ferme auberge ( which we booked for the following lunchtime ).

With the boys comfortably fed and happily watching a DVD, we walked the few yards across the
farmyard to the ferme auberge for a lunch a deux. It proved to be a wonderful 5-course treat for 21 euros a head plus wine. The only other guests were a party of two ladies and a gentleman, who clearly hadn’t been there before and were enjoying the experience as much as we were. First course was the farm’s own homemade coarse pate with fresh salad. Then came the piece de resistance of the meal – a superb Roquefort soufflé, huge and fluffy. ( The small town of Roquefort was nearby and the farmer’s wife that was preparing the meal considered this particular producer to be the best ). Main course was succulent lamb chops served with roasted rosemary potatoes (delicious). Then came the cheese – Roquefort (of course) plus various others, a combination of goats, ewes and cows milk cheeses. The final course was individual tarte tatins. All in all a wonderful meal and a great experience ( thanks Anne and Paul ). The weather, however, was not relenting. We drove on through driving rain down the motorway to a site near Montpellier.

Millau and Ferme Auberge de Jassenove
Hi Glad you enjoyed your meal. we have a house in Nant and always eat there - it is fabulous traditional French rustic food. Hope the rest of your trip is as fabulous.
