Bariloche
View from the top of the revolving restaurant. We are still recovering from our time in Chile and what better way to do that than get to the Beach! After spending a few days in Bariloche we made our way across the country to the East coast and into the city of Bahia Blanca, Mar Del Plata, and now Pinamar.
BARILOCHE
This place was absolutley gorgeous! We arrived in the evening on Thursday just when the sun was setting over the mountains and across the lake, breathtaking.
We ended up meeting two girls who were taking a break from volunteering in Santiago when we were in Castro, so we stayed at the same hostel and went out for Mexican food our first night.
Bariloche is technically in Patigonia, it was cold but not as cold as the rest of Patigonia I imagine. There were no glaciers here, but there was a ton of pine trees. The city is built directly beside a lake which is surrounded by mountains, most of the building are made of stone or logs. We felt as if we had stepped back into Canada and gone to Banff, or Northern Ontario. (Donna Peters this is your dream place!)
Our second day we decided to
take the 5.5 km hike up to the Telefornio, that took us up to the top of a mountain for spectacular views of the countryside. We got to the top and decided to have a coffee, entering the restaurant we wanted to pick the seat with the best view. After looking around for a bit we found one, sat down and then realized we were moving! It was a revolving restaurant...so I guess we did get the best view after all. Bariloche s natural beauty was stunning, it was a perfect place to enjoy our last few days in western Argentina.
BAHIA BLANCA
After a 13hr busride we entered Bahia Blancha, found a hotel (Hotel Victoria) and fell asleep. The hotel we decided to stay at was very nice, clean and not expensive, it is an old mansion converted into a hotel with a nice garden and high ceilings. Although it was pretty, it was not quiet. That morning about 4am we woke up to someone stomping around in what sounded like high heel shoes (most likely the maids, they tend to do that in this country). No more sleep for us! So we got up and did some
Banff??
I mean Barioche! exploring of the city. Basically just another city, nothing too exciting.
Jeff{s note.... Amanda would love to add more detail here but managed to kill enuff brain cells on some outstanding argentinian wine... so much so that we were sitting at a tenedaor de libre (buffet) and she simply stared at ger plate for 30 minutes...thinking she had eaten (and well probably drank) enuff, we decided to head back to the hostel where she turned to me and said I{m hungry! Gotta love this gal!
MAR DEL PLATA
Mar del Plata is a beach town, right on the Atlantic Ocean. The city is surrounded by beach, North Beach, South Beach, Fisherman´s Beach etc... Because we are traveling in the fall here it is pretty quiet along the coast. Mar del Plata is THE place to be in the summer and most families from Argentina choose to vacation here, there were as many hotels as there were houses on some streets.
Jeff and I went to visit the Museum del Mar. This is a 4 story museum with a whole bunch of aquariums full of fish, sharks, stingrays, and turtles. It also has one of the worlds largest sea
Muse del Mar
Aquarium at the museum in Mar del Plata. shell collections, I have never seen so many shells. We were proud to see some shells from Nova Scotia and Bay of Fundy, Yay Canada!. If you are planning on going to Mar del plata, the museum is definitely worth a visit.
Jeffs note... yeah the museum was cool but they had frickin sharks! anyone who knows me knows there are only 2 things that scare the crap out of me... sharks and dentists.... freaky!
PINAMAR
Today we have arrived into the village of Pinamar. It is a cold fall day here, most of the leaves have made their way off the trees, and the town is really quiet. We are staying at a cute little hotel run by an elderly Italian woman (who constanlty smells of onions). People are friendly, and the ocean front view is relaxing once you get past the chilly breeze.
Tomorrow we will head to Buenos Aries for more adventures!
Buenos Aires
We will give a much more detailed version of this incredible city when we get back to it soon... we spent about 2 days there this past week and here are some quick thoughts...
Felt very much like
being in europe... the architecture.... the party atmosphere... the restaurants... the shopping... if one ever needed to go on a spending spree, this is the spot!
We met back up for one last hurrah with our old travelling buddy joan... now i was thinking ok, back to normal, good ole joan will handle the speaking again... but alas in out absence she has bacically become a mute! poor girl was so ill she couldnt makie out a word... but we got by and are happy to see her for a few more days before she heads into brazil...
We also had an exteremely cool night o saturday with joan and our new canadian friend Gen (who looks exactly like my old roomie amber!) We went to a tango show! Now my only experience with tango was watching arnold schwarznegger butcher it in true lies... but wow it was impressive...it was a lot of singing, some amazing musicians , especially on the piano and 2 very good dancers... my only complain...well the guy had this look on his face the whole time he was dancing like he was going to just have an explosive crap..painful was the word..but al
Pinamar
Yah doesn´t that beach look so warm and sunny? Boooo...if only it was summer here! in all a very interesting experience..i kept waiting for swayze to show up!
you know you learn alot about people when you travel together... their lil habits...quirks...secrets... but amanda has clearly been holding out the fact that she is a friggin superhero! BA has a very old subway system that we tried out on the weekend... standard cars...three doors per car... well when it came time to get off, only one door opened and of course it wasnt ours... we ran over to the door that did open and of course there were like 4 lil ole ladies trying to get on at the same time... well joan got out ok... as amanda was trying to get out , the doors shut on her... then in true spiderman fashion, as the doors began to close she pried and held them open as the train began moving away... we both then jumped out onto the platform as the train was beginning to pick up speed... SIGH.... MY HERO ( it was not really that scary mom!)
Now or the clark kent side of superman...last week we were watching tv and this commercial came on... npw those of you who
Tango in Buenos Aries
Great show...except for the constipated look on the guys face the whole time. know amanda know tht she is te epitome of class on all occassions...but has been known to let the odd (!) belch now and then... well in this commercial, there i woman who is tall and slender and is a brunette (sound familiar?)..anyways its in english, but there are spanish subtitles and the name of the show is in spanish... anyways... the girl is talking at the beginning of the commercial about how she is going to finally snag her dream man (just for funs sake, lets call him Jeff!)... sal she do it with grace? shall she do it with grace? ... anyways it then cuts to a clip after clip of her letting out huge ass burps in front of this guy...looked amusing... but the punch line is this... the name of the show? Mi Amando Brady ! Which for those of you who dont speak spanish means I am Amanda Brady! We both just looked at each other and burst out laughing.. wierd...
sunday saw us finally break down and say the hell with buses... this one would have been a 20 hour macdaddy too... we flew north to iguazu falls, and are staying at this great
Front row centre
Joan, Amanda, Jeff and Gen (from Canada!!) hostel which has pretty much everything you could ever want...last night we took a sneak peak at the main event, taking a night full moon tour of the falls... more to follow as these babies deserve their own entry trust me!
all the best to everyone at home... happy mothers day to donna and donna and to our grandmothers Dorothy and Mary! Go oilers and we cant wait to hea what the excuse is this year sens fans!
(WE WILL BE ADDING PICS LATER TODAY OR TOMORROW)
