National Maritime Museum

In Darling harbour is the famous National Maritime Museum. As we had passed this many times we decided to go and visit. We were able to get onto a submarine and a destroyer ship and look around. The submarine was called HMAS Onslow. It is an Oberon class submarine made in 1968. To get into the submarine you had to be very bendy and go through lots of hatches and holes that kept it watertight when it was underwater. It was a long way down the ladder and the size of the beds that they men had to sleep on reminded me of a play house they looked so small. The man told us that the men could be under the sea for weeks without coming up for air and that there would be 3 men that all shared one bed but slept at different times. We say the tiny captains room and the sonar room where they listened to all the noises of the sea.

After looking at the submarine we got to go on a much bigger ship. This ship was a destroyer called HMAS Vampire. It is a daring class destroyer built in 1956. This ship was much much bigger than the submarine and there were many more bunk beds here and also big tolilets. There were big kitchens and the captain even had a double bed. HMAS vampire has been in the waters in lots of different situations like the Falklands War. It has really big guns on the front and the back of the ship and I got to sit in the gunners seat and pretend to fire the guns. I dont think that I would like to live on a ship if someone was firing all these guns at me.

Finally there is a fantastic museum there that has a helicopter on the ceiling and lots of boats on the walls that go through time, back to the first Canoes. There is also a fantastic shark exhibition where you can even put your head in the Jaws of a dead shark . Their teeth are so sharp that they had to be pretend ones. This is a great place and you can spend hours here having lots of fun
