I haven't got any pictures from the local market But I remember somehow what was on sale. It was a large vegetable, fish and meat market. I also remember the sale of the khat . It's a bunch of leaves that the locals like to chew and chew for hours. it's classified as a drug and consumers spend loads of money into it. They say that it enhances alertness and concentration and that is good to use for studies. Personally I rather noticed that people using it were in a state of nonchalance and apathy.
Some cab drivers use it quite often and you can tell by their red eyes and their Hyper relax behaviors. Tonnes of Khat arrive every day from Ethiopia and according to the UN, Djiboutian spend a staggering $170 millions a year in that stuff. Wow!
There is plenty to eat in Djibouti town and at different prices. Of course foreign restaurants and especially the French ones are very expensive and not a good value for your money, plus the service is just average. So why bother going there at all. Local restaurants give you plenty to eat at cheaper prices and the service is more courteous.
You generally eat outdoors in hot season, sitting on the sea port or on the beach enjoying a nice local soup made of meat and vegetables, the Fah-Fah. They make samosas, serve turtle steaks and even camel is eaten there, was I told.
The Yemenite restaurant in town has a choice of fresh fish that can be prepared and cooked in many different ways. I have had The Djiboutian rice, the skoudelkharis. It’s lamb in tomato sauce and peppers and rice …yummy! Or even better, the fish in sauce, the Marake kaloune. It’s very copious and very tasty indeed. When you come out you know you feel full, have enjoyed a great meal and the wallet hasn’t suffered. Oven fish or grilled fish are excellent too.
