Rany picked us up this morning at 5 am and we headed to Angkor Wat and took our places in front of its lagoon inside and waited for about an hour before the sun rose at about 6:20. By 7:00 we were at the next temple. The second was pretty neat because it was symmetrical with four small square ponds on each side of a larger square pond which had a building in the center. The third one was small and there really was only one thing to see there: the tree that grew over the back entrance. Next we went to Mebon temple and then the Pre Rup temple. These last two were nice and I enjoyed exploring them, though I think my favorite is still Ta Prohm with all the trees. We finished at Angkor Thom (film location of
Laura Croft: Tomb Raider) and had to wait about 10 minutes before going in because a Japanese documentary was being filmed for National Geographic. One man sort of tried to be my tour guide for part of the time in there as if he was doing it to be helpful and then asked for money.
After this Rany brought
us back to our hotel for a hiatus and then picked us back up at 16:00 to take us to a fishing village. Turns out that he just took us to a boat where we had to pay a whopping $15 each, something I would expect to pay in the US. This was going to take us to "the floating market, crocodile farm, fish farm, see the sunset". Our driver and guide took us to a little shop to buy some gifts for the school we were going to see -- something popped on us at the last minute and I was not appreciative of this forced charity. Then we looked at the school for all of five minutes before going to the floating market. This turned out not to be a market but just another tourist shop that had two square sections in the water, one for the crocodiles, one for the catfish. Then we got back on our boat to watch the sun set. About an hour had passed since we got on the boat and they dropped us off at the end. They asked us for a tip, to which we declined, and we left. I was
pretty annoyed at the whole situation because I was unprepared for and uniformed about what we were paying for. Anyways, this was not a good experience for me and I left feeling swindled and exploited.
For dinner we had a nice little BBQ on the street where you cook the meat or seafood you choose on your table. This, with two cokes and a fried rice, came to a total of $6.50. Beautiful. We were planning on taking a bus to the 4,000 islands tomorrow, but found out that there's only one company that runs there and it leaves at 5:30 am and is a 12-hour-long ride! So we're going to take it easy here in town tomorrow and go on Sunday. Ta ta for now!
