The first weekend of December we spent in Raglan. It’s small surfer town on the west coast and a two hour drive from Auckland. I had already been there in July, when it was pretty quiet and no surf, so it was a lot different in summer. Unfortunately there was no swell this weekend as well, and it was about 1ft and messy. Surfable on a longer board so a few of the others who hadn’t surfed before had a lesson, but I didn’t feel it was worth renting the gear. (The main reason for the trip was just to get away from the city for a while and chill out, so I wasn’t really disappointed about not surfing).

One of the guys on the trip was quite a keen surfer and had brought his board over from Brazil, but it was a shortboard so I had a couple of failed attempts in the poor conditions! Anyhow, the sea was just about bearable to stay in for a while without a wetsuit, so this was technically the first time I’ve surfed without a wetsuit (something I was dying to tick off!).

For most of the day we just chilled out on the beach in the sun. The sand on the west coast is black because of (think it’s something to do with having a lot of iron in!?!?!) making it almost too hot to walk on.

We checked into our eco resort. The reason we ended up staying there is because everywhere else in the town was booked up, but it turned out to be a real blessing in disguise. The place was self sufficient and had such a laid back atmosphere, with a lot of surfers staying there. So I will definitely be going back there in the summer for a long weekend when the surf report is looking good.
