We had to back track to the main transportation town of San Pedro Sula, which was about 2 hours form the port of Le Cieba. We changed buses and off to the capital Tegucigalpa, (7 hours) The reason for being in the capital was purly to get to Nicuragua as it was not possible to get to the border in time.
So a night in a city that looked more like Bangdad than I care to remember.
We found quite a decent place to stay for the night, and a great pork stir fry type meal from a street vendor outside the hotel. A good nights sleep and up at 8am for the bus to Nicuragua. PROBLEM.......
On getting to the bus station we were told that the direct bus was full. The "helpful" cab driver took us to two other bus station to find a bus with no luck..... finally we ended up finding a chicken bus to take us to the town closes to the border.
A few hours there, another bus change, and hey presto we were at the Honduran/Nicuraguan border, no problem.
Border crossing, normally there will only be a few buses a day to the border, and they carry a bunch of confused Gringos, so they are met with with hourdes of helpful locals giving you a chance to boost the local economy. Today on offer were, bicycles taxis and the normal usual money changes. The deal was we paid a fun young guy $2 to cycle Mel and myself with our bags the 1KM to the border post, he then waited 30 minutes while I got the passports stamped, and cycled us 2KM into Nicuragua where we were to meet the Chicken bus for our next leg.
He worked for his cash. I am sure he would be telling the days story to his friends in the bar that night. Of how be paddled this fat Gringo bastard all the way with his wife, who was luckily small but she made up with it, with biggest backpack he had seen.
I felt so bad that I walked some of the way and tipped him double.
after a short wait while the bus driver changed a tyre, with the bus full of people we were on our way.
