St Martin-in-the-Fields
Candelit evening at the concert (October 2010), London I made some weekend trips down to London during October and November. It was mainly to spend time with friends, see musicals and operas and also for visiting places of interest that complimented my university studies. I did not do as much sightseeing compared to when I was in London during the summer but there are some places where I would recommend visits to:
St Martin-in-the-Fields I visited this beautiful church a couple of times during my travels.
St Martin-in-the-Fields is landmark in its own right and adjacent to Trafalgar Square. On my first visit, I enjoyed exploring the church and admiring its architecture especially the new East Window and having refreshments at the Cafe in the Crypt. The highlight for me was sitting in the chruch and listening to the orchestra practice for one of the evening concerts. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to them so much that I decided to book a ticket for an evening concert for when I was next down in London. My second visit to St Martin-in-the-Fields was to attend the booked concert and it was an enjoyable evening.
Bankside Gallery I had a look round in this
independent gallery which is home
to the the Royal Watercolour Society the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers whose members' work you can usually see there. When I visited, in October 2010, Hilary Paynter, a wood-engraver, launched her book, 'Wood Engravings' and her work at the gallery. Her collection was interesting to look at and I admire the intricracy she had put into her works.
Dr Johnson's House ...when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford - Samuel Johnson
The above quote has stuck to me whenever I think about London and how the city has become one of my very favourite places to visit on this planet! With the cheap rail tickets that are available now, I can able to travel to London more frequently than before. I learnt a bit about Dr Samuel Johnson in the English Language Module I'm currently studying. One afternoon in November I decided to visit
Dr Johnson's House near Fleet Street out of curiousity. I spent a couple of hours visiting the house and looking at the collections of his work including his first Dictionary editions and memorablia. The house celebrates Dr Johnson's life and what he accomplished in the English Language World such as compiling one of the very first English Language Dicitionaries.
The British Library
The purpose of
The British Library was to visit an English Language Exhibition,
Evolving English, One Language, Many Voices to compliment my studies. The free exhibition was fascinating and I learnt a lot! I spent half a day looking around the exihibition; participating in the interactive displays and listening to interviews and experiences. I hope to revisit the exhibition in the new year and learn even more things from a different context.
The London Coliseum I saw two operas during my visits in London, I saw
Faust and
Don Giovanni, which were excellent productions done by the
English National Opera. The London Coliseum is such a beautiful building and would recommend for opera lovers to pay a visit there whilst in London. I discovered one of my favourite cafes, La Roche, where I would go for my caffeine fix and the cafe opens until midnight!
I also saw some of my favourite musicals including
Love Never Dies with some of my friends. As always, I thoroughly enjoyed myself and look forward to seeing more musicals in the new year especially Love Never Dies, a musical
I am so proud of!
