Cambodia is the land of snacking.
Along streets everywhere in Phnom Penh there are food vendors that push, pedal or moto their food carts, stopping whenever they have a customer or when they are at a "good" corner. The vendors sell anything you can imagine: fruit, eggs, bread, fried noodles, sandwiches, ice cream, the list goes on and on! Yesterday, we even saw a cart that sells baguettes with ice cream inside - that, we will have to try!
In addition to all these mobile carts, there are permanent stands all over the place. Around the corner from our office is a women who sells fried bananas and fried potatoes every afternoon, in front of her house. Delicious! (Side note: The way to say "stay at" in Khmer, sounds like the English words "snack now." Daron and I think this is fantastic, so whenever we're hungry for fried bananas, we say "snack now!" Yes, it doesn't make sense, but we think we're hilarious.)
Outside the market near our apartment, there are several fruit smoothy vendors. Our favorite is run by a women that makes delicious pineapple smoothies. She cuts up the fruit, adds a little sweetened condensed milk, ice and puts this all in a blender. Then (and this is our favorite part), she hands the blender to her husband who walks it across the street where he proceeds to plug it into an outlet leading directly into the electric lines. Awesome! (Update: as of last week, she now has electricity connecting directly to her stand. Obviously this is great for her, but it's less exciting for us...)
Anyway, we're definitely getting plenty to eat around here! And actually, as I type this, I'm enjoying some of those delicious fried bananas. "Snack Now!"
