Hey again!
We caught the bus from Hastings to Taupo after Kevin dropped us off, it was a fairly comfy 2 and a 3/4 hour journey to Taupo. First off - it was Freezing!! Turns out it was about 8 degrees! We had booked in for 2 nights at the Tiki Lodge where we had a great view of the snow covered mountains in the distance! We have started our self catering and went out to a supermarket to buy some food! Ended up getting tuna, pasta, bread, juice, butter and vegemite YUM!
We explored Taupo for the day and headed back a little earlier as the weather got quite bad and was too cold!! We made our dinner of tuna pasta and hung out in the lounge area in the evening.
We went down to the lake, which had the stunning views across and we walked across in the morning. The day was slightly warmer and very sunny so made it a very pleasant day to be out and about! We walked further on down and across down to where we saw a sea plane, and different varieties of ducks and pigeons. We then went to a
marinal harbour where there were quite a few boats and Natalie bought a flat white and we sat on a bench overlooking the harbour before carrying on. We walked up through a leafy park nearby the harbour and were very tempted by two ropes hanging down off a tree to swing into the lake. After contemplating the cold eventually told us that it probably wouldn't be the best idea granted we didn't have a change of clothes so something that would have to be done in Summer! Was very scenic round that area. We then went further on to another park of the lake and climbed down to get closer views which was stunning!
Later we bought a bottle of wine to treat ourselves as it only worked out as costing 1.50 each! We watched Lord of the Rings in the lounge area in the evening then sorted ourselves out for Rotorua.
Rotorua We caught the bus to Rotorua, which is probably the shortest journey we have ever and will have on this whole trip being one hour! After half an hour to Rotorua, you could smell the sulphur which most would say smells like rotton egg
as we were approaching. In Rotorua, you can smell it generally and the smell gets stronger in different parts of the town and randomly, but it's never really unpleasant and you get used to it quite quickly!
Rotorua is known for it's geothermal activity so we went to Kuirau Park which is a large park and has different areas of obvious thermal activity around the park. On the way and in other areas of Rotorua we noticed steam coming up from the road gutters. We walked along the paths in the park and there was a big pool of water which was boiling, you could see the bubbles and the whole place was very very steamy! We also saw some boiling mud pools, there were quite a few signs round the park saying 'Danger' as the lakes and mud pools are obviously way too hot so anyone touching it risks getting scalded. There were however some pools for you to sit by and put your feet in! The whole place was very atmospheric.
After the park, we went to the night market that Rotorua has on every thursday. We bought 2 huge chicken dumplings which were huge and
then made our way back in the evening and made new zealand lamb sausages and mash!
