Day 4 - Tortuga - A day at sea (5 Aug 2010)

Day 3 ended with the girls arriving safe and sound around 10:30. Once everyone got settled we sat down to chat and have a few beers. Only the bedrooms have A/C, so Kirsten not wanting to waste energy shut Maija and Jenn’s bedroom door to keep the cold A/C air in the room. Unbeknownst to her the door locked automatically. After a fun night of catching up, everyone ventured upstairs to go to bed. But oh no, Jenn and Maija are locked out. No problem, there has to be a key here. So we find a cup of keys in the junk drawer. As Kirsten starts to try them all, she realizes it is not good when pieces of metal begin to fall from the lock onto the floor. These are the tumblers for the lock. As pieces of the lock continue to fall out it becomes apparent that keys will be of no help at this time. So with a bit of brute force, Kirsten turns the knob right off. So now we have an exposed lock, but still no entry. Kirsten is beginning to sweat wondering where

everyone is going to sleep tonight. In a search for tools, the best we can do is a corkscrew. So about 15 minutes later with a lot of persistence and cussing, we finally get into the room. So for future reference, screw the Leatherman just bring a wine key.

Day 4 starts with breakfast cooked by the maid. Even if it sucked it would still be good, but it didn’t suck. Then we were off for a day out at sea. We arrive at the port in town and find out it is not locked up. Despite no one speaking English we manage to sweet talk our way past the guards. Later we find out we should have paid. We are good! We meet our crew of average age 25. Captain, first mate and one piece of accessory ( a hot little skinny b&*ch, but damit she was actually nice). We gracefully (not) climb into the Penga to head to the sail boat “The Gypsy.” The weather was perfect, sunny but not crazy hot and lots of wind. So off we go sailing. The crew was very attentive to our drinking needs and think they were just trying to

get us drunk. We did tell them there were no tips unless we saw turtles (Tortugas), which we turned into our Nicaraguan mantra. We basked in the sun with the white glow of the abundant corn fed, Nebraska skin. We were lucky enough to have a crew member on the boat who pointed out “Survivor Beach” from a distance. Chester was disappointed that she couldn’t see Jeff Probst. We learned it was better to just sit on our butts and demand Cerveza from the crew rather than try to walk with no sea legs. FYI, Dramamine really works as 3 can attest to its effectiveness. We were excited to see a single bird hovering near the boat. While lying on her back Kirsten realizes that the bird is about to take a crap. A few second later, Chester, Maija, and Tracey all yelled “I’ve been hit” The only boat or living beings within 30 miles and the bird hits 3. He should play the lotto. They told us this meant good luck. Time will tell. We also saw the sea turtles from a distance who were engaged in an afternoon delight. Maybe we will see their eggs Saturday night.

Just after the trip starts.

We anchored in a nice calm bay and proceeded to choreograph our 2012 Olympic synchronized swimming trials routine with deck work being 50% of the score. Our pre-game meal consisted of us devouring 3 bowls of bean dip in 8.2 seconds. Lunch of Champions. Yes we were hungry. After not waiting the required 30 minute to swim, we performed our routine (see video). We have sworn the crew to secrecy as to not give away our gold medal routine. After performing our deck work, we were armed with Sponge Bob and Spiderman floaties (that were not quite big enough) and we swam our way to the beach. The beauty of salt water is that fat and skinny both float. (Not that we would know about the skinny part). We got pelted by waves for a bit and walked along the beach, then headed back to the boat for lunch. One in the group realized that throwing a floating onto the boat was not so easy (took 6 times).

We scarfed down our sandwiches while watching dark, ominous clouds roll in. So Captain Zach told us to hold on, we were going to outrun them. Well 5 minutes later we

were getting poured on. It was such a nice summer rain for the first 10 minutes. Then it really came down and 2 smart ones went undercover (Kirsten and Chester). (Note: Other DT members disagreed with this comment). When the hard stuff, as Carl from “Caddy Shack” would say, started coming we realized there was no outrunning it and just got comfortable and headed back to port. After sitting in the rain for an hour, Amy goes under to use the facilities and guess what comes to the side of the boat, a school of dolphins. Amy comes running out mad as hell that she was missing it. Fortunately they hung around for about 15 minutes on the sides of the boat jumping in our wake and on the bow. This guaranteed the crew’s tip since we spotted all of the turtles ourselves. The rain eventually stopped just long enough for us to get back to shore and unload.

After a long day at sea the girls were hungry (what else is new) so we prettied up (relatively speaking) and headed to town because it was “ladies night”. Really it was free drinks. Unless you were Amy who paid

for them anyway. We ate at a great new restraint ElBEEstro. Some in the party (Tracey) had to cover up the head of the fish to eat the rest, but it was worth it. We had a few bottles of wine, great fish and steak and a bit of dessert. So now we were ready to find a place to dance. While walking down the street, with a flash light lighting our way, guess what happened. Lighting strikes twice for some and more birds pooped on Chester and Kirsten. It was in the cards for Chester to get lucky tonight , but since she showered and shaved it was never going to happen. We ended up at Iguanas for some drinks and the best people watching in town. The mix of the 15 dorky Dutch fraternity guys (we met them in Ometepe) and a women’s Div 12 volleyball team from Gannon University in Pennsylvania (they all need a lesson in wearing bras with sundresses) was quite the entertainment. As old women we did leave early by Nica standards, midnight. It took us all about 5 min to fall asleep. But was a great first day for the group in San
